A simple idea to stop fighting commanders?

.....only on titan mode though - I'm not quite sure yet how you would get it working on conquest or assault lines.

Why not make it so that the commander only had his assets available to him, when he was present on the hangar deck? Even if he goes below deck and behind the reactor room - or pods back onto his own titan and lands on the roof - the assets should be greyed out and unavailable. The moment he drops back down to the hangar through the shield - they are enabled again?

I personally don't have 'that' much of an issue with fighting commanders - but I can see why they are deemed to be unfair. In certain situations, being in something like a walker and calling down a crate right next to you, can make you almost invulnerable - especially if the other side simply shoot away at the walker and not the supply crate at the side of it? :shakehead

I've done the same in single player mode on BF2. It was easy to sit in a T-72, have the crate at the side of you and rack-up 99-0 k/d ratio. Obviously, bots are no match for real players, but the principal is the same.

Any ideas how you could work it on the other game modes?

Very simple. Commander can not use vehicles or weapons. He'd have a laptop kinda thing in his hand to watch the battlefield and call for orbitals etc. He'd have a small Commander base that can be defended (so he can defend himself once the baserape starts). If he is mutinied, he will get the weapons he selected at the spawn screen. Oh and if he leaves the Commander base, his assets are not working until he comes back (repairing stuff)... Just realized, this isn't simple at all. But cool anyhow.
I mean seriously, currently commanders are hiding behind crates and stuff? That's not nice for being a commander. I'd vote for some kind of small base in BF3.

hows about commanders get NO kills for anything other than orbitals? there's no point in fighting if there's no point in fighting...

also, no mutinies when there are less than 50 tickets for either team

i like this idea. commanders should get a small, armored bunker in every map, guarded by two stationary sentry guns at its entrance, that can be destroyed, but could be disabled by rockets or something. but the best thing to be is commander for the EU on Port Bavaria. theres little danger of getting shot in thier uncap! maybe once ill go to thier uncap and and kill thier commander.....

Best thing overal would be either lock the commander in place so he cant get out of the main base or if he cant be locked into place it should be that if he leaves his base he will get a warning and after 15 seconds he shouldnt be commander anymore.

Or even easier. What about if when the commander got killed, the guy who nailed him got a 1 Kill added, but also got a big career score (e.g 50 career points) just for getting the commander?

The opposing team would probably go commander-hunting just for the points!

no, that would be bad because what happens if the enemy comes to the base? he cant move much, or if at all, and if the base is captured, he cant flee.... and thats bad....

That all sounds great, but a certain round comes to mind that I played as commander once in BF2. Since I could see the location of the enemies, I could quickly scan, drop arty, give my team UAV, then move to the empty flag on the other side of the map. I think I capped the most flags that round and I still was able to contribute to my team in the commander position. I know that being able to do this is rare, but I believe there is a reason why the commander can access his screen from anywhere on the map.

Simple solution: lock him inside the Titan hungar/consoles and he will eventually get too bored and resign or actually do something with all the assets he has available. In conquest mode this is harder to program correctly, but it could be something that is optional, like FF on/off. Good squad leaders learn quickly that staying under cover and alive help their squads much more than going in with guns blazing.

Anyone one knows about The Hunted gamemode? it's really old but fun to do. The point is that you have to protect your commander from being killed if you kill him you get 5 points, if you teamkill him you get -5 points if you rez him you will get +7 points. Also the commander has limited space to go to possibly 250m2 or something so he can flee around lol.

Personally, I'm not always against combat commanders. Sometimes, your team is just a flock of headless chickens and the commander needs to take care of things himself. As long as he periodically deploys UAVs and supplies, I have no real reason against them. Of course, in conquest, there could be a supertight military shack where commanders must sit.

I did mean to respond to it earlier!

I just wonder if 'orbital only' would be enough to entice commanders to take the role? It should do, if they want to do a proper job, but I'm sure they will feel the urge to help out when needs must.

I've been on a titan round where the friendly commander literally fended off the enemy aircraft with his SAAW. Which is fair enough, but dropping a crate right next to him for his own personal use was a bit selfish, imo.

Great idea about the no mutinies sub-50 points though. I really like that.

I agree the commander can fight, but is first duty is dropping supplies and keeping the UAV up and running. When I commanding supporting the troops is priority one, then fighting only if I need to.

this IS the winning answer. i will play commander on campG somtimes simply for the benefit of using the commander assets for myself.

but then that gives people even less of a reason to play commander but then the only commanders would be good commanders but idk how it would work in practice
