What I think makes it popular is.

    A. The next COD Game that is made by IW
    B.The Graphics
    C. Its similar to CSS basically it is without recoil and better graphics so it attracts a lot of the CSS players
    D. and it has a good clan base

The OP isn't asking what makes the game itself popular, but how to get traffic on a specific server. How to make that particular server popular and get people playing on it.

The bit to et the server populated is the very beginging.
            1. Only have a server once you have a decent clan with a fair few active members.
            2. ADVERTISE!!!, no one is gonna join if they dont know it exists.
            3. Like what others said dont kick people if you are having a bad day and feel like kicking people, only kick for resonible reason.
            4. Organise weekly etc events on the server for clan and non clan members.

i know i dont lead a clan or have lead a successful one but i have been in enough.

                    Streaming Server

Some people can't handle getting killed all the time. If they can't stay alive long enough to shoot anyone, they will leave. My clan doesn't event play on our server much at all. We can't populate it when we are in it. Sure some will stay for the competition but most just leave. It's hard enough for people just to find our server let alone stay in it.

Sogek1ng is a one man army by himself. Then throw some other good [SS] players in the mix. Thats enough to piss anyone off.

Yeah, that's been my experience. People stop in my server, get their butts kicked, they complain about "lag" and leave. =\

Very frequently I'll just run around with a pistol out and let myself get killed so people would want to stay and play... Doesn't work. :dead:

I'll come and play with SS, but the server is empty most often. I seem to not be able to find a good home to play CoD4 and that's very frustrating.

We had 10 of us on our server last night. People would keep joining but they would not stay. We also had our monthly meeting last night and we decided to drop our servers due to this problem. It's just a wast of money at this point and spending another $900 on a server for 6 months for no one to play in it is out of the question. We will get another server whenever a new FPS game is released with some teamwork involved.

That is the magic question that plagued us when we tried to run a BF2 server. I camped out playing in one of the most popular servers at the time, had the exact same map list and everything. We ran it and when it got going things were really great. However, the one map that some upper members of our Squad insisted on being in the mix hit, everyone bailed. Basically, most people despised the air maps and our guys loved them.

In COD4, I'm not sure yet as I've only been playing for 2 weeks. You really need to appeal to a certain niche whatever that may be. Hardcore players, TDM players, Sabotage players. Some do a great job of mixing maps and game styles to get a good variety going. Sometimes this can be bad, as I thought it was TDM, so took more chances and it turned out to be S&D. Go figure.
