which card you think?

Well I got a friend who wants to play GOW on his crappy comp and he needs a gfx card upgrade.

I'm looking for an opinion or thoughts on which card. He play at low resolutions, like 1024x762 or w/e.

I'm suggesting a 8800 GT, 8800 GTS or a 9600.

His cap off is under $500 CAD.

I'm going to do some more looking around but what I really need is some opinions on these cards as I think they are best for him. Ohyeah, he is on vista which is why I ruled out the DX9 catagory already.

And he will be buying from either tigerdirect.ca or canadacomputers.com

8800GT isnt a low card :p that thing can play crysis on high.. but it is dirt cheap so tell him to get that one and later on he can still play the newer games.. because lets be honest soon as he plays one game and likes it he will want to play more :) 8800GT is perfect...


Here is a REALLY nice one for $299 and EVGA is good because they offer the step up program aswell as great warrenty.. and re-sell warrenty which means if he sells it to someone else later on they get warrenty aswell.. although i might be wrong... im pretty sure they do offer that :)


P.S. whats his other specs?? mobo, ram, psu, cpu???

either one would do the job... though the GT is more future proof and alot more powerful..
with GOW u should get high settings and a nice resolution without any probs

If the rest if his system is crap a 8800gt wont be able to help him much. What else does he have in his system?

Factory OC adds about 4fps at the most. You could achieve that overclock yourself, and even more!

Lol I don't expect much from his system, I think it was a HP. I tried to talk to his dad whom I work with that buying those computers is a waste of money but they went ahead with it. Surely enough, less than a year later his son is looking for more performance lol.

As far as I know its a P4 and probably has 2 gb of ram. Getting a video card will mean that he is going to need a new psu as well. I'm trying to keep it simple for him, he is not a gizmo at this stuff so OCing things is out of the option.

As for the video card, I myself use an evga 8800 gtx and 680i mobo so I'm very supportive about that brand. In fact I am somewhat of a fanboy now for evga, they are usually my first glance look for any mobo or video card and then I base my comparisons off from there.

I was merely curious to know if the 9600 is actually worth anything or if its more like that pos 8600 which I'm affraid it is hence why I'm looking for thoughts. I'll tell him to get the 8800GT, which was the card I was going to go with anyways.

looking at psus, im guessing he will prolly need a 600watt one and im not sure if the gt will need 2 power inputs so I'm thinking this model by OCZ

I have the 700w version in my pc. Or he can go with the stealth 600w ocz psu for like 20 bucks less

The 9600 is cheaper and on paper looks slower but in the real world a small OC will bring this card in to and in some cases over the 8800GT. Of course you can buy a pre OC'd one and get the benefit right out the box. Mind you I wouldn't but any of those cards, with the higher end 9 series just round the corner and with almost every new Nvidia card instantly making the older cards obsolete I would wait a month or two until the 98series cards hit the shelves.
