I just used the auto-update option and downloaded v1.4. Could not find any servers. Read somewhere that I needed v1.5, so I found it and downloaded it. Still no servers. Any Ideas?
I was fine with the installed version I got from the begining. Now I can't play any multi player at all. Not happy with that.

Something is preventing your PC from communicating with the Activision Master Server to get the entire list of available servers (about 15,000 at the moment, with 45,000 players).

Usual culprits:
- be sure to manually update Punkbuster (www.evenbalance.com)
- disable any anti-virus software running in the background
- be sure your firewall allows the changed COD4 .exe file to access the Net.

Try some searches on this forum...this question has been asked many times.

well, i am not good enough with computers to figure this out. Is there a way to get back to the version it started with? I don't want ot hvae to do anything but click and log in. What if I uninstall, reinstall? will i get the "first" version back? Will I lose my ranks?

If you're going to enjoy PC gaming, you have to learn this stuff. :) It's not as hard as it sounds.

First things, first...do you have a store-bought copy of the game, or did you download it from a company like direct-2-drive, Steam, etc? I only ask because if you have a store-copy, then the "regular" patch is fine. But if you have an e-purchased version, then you need a special e-patch to properly patch your game.

Now, let's worry about Punkbuster. Go to the Evenbalance website and read the FAQ on how to do a manual update of Punkbuster (or search this forum, as it has been posted before). It's simple to do.

To answer your most recent questions:
- yes, if you uninstall and re-install the game, you'll be back at version 1.0 ...from there you can choose to patch to 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, or 1.5 all over again.
- yes, you will lose your ranks/stats this way, unless you back up your Profiles folder to your desktop, then copy/paste it back in once you've re-installed.

I really recommend trying to learn and solve the problem you have now, rather than going back, however. The biggest reason is that most servers are patched to either 1.4 or 1.5, so if you want to play online, that's where most people are. And you'll need these versions to play on custom maps.

Again it's a little bit of learning for you, but we've all been there before. It's not rocket science. Start with the first two things I asked in this post, and we'll go from there.

Also check that the source in the server browser menu is set to 'Internet' rather than Favourites or LAN.

I thank you very much for the help and advice. But I simply won't play a game that makes me do stuff like this to play it. I pay my money so that others can do this work. It is unacceptable to me for a gaming company to NOT do everything for me. I would like to know the process of backing up my profiles folder to my desktop.

Again thanks for the info. I did manually update my PB ( at least I believe I did), and if a game requires me to turn off my virus protection, well, lets just say I don't live dangerously. Another thing that is unacceptable to me from a game. I play plenty of games with my McAfee up. Don't see why I would have to turn it off to play a game.

Wish they would just make things work right. An instalation without any of this technical stuff. It has an auto installer, what is the point if I have to go in behind it and change stuff? Its very frustrating I must say. I want the new content, but not at the risk of my computer.

Sorry about the rambling. This is just not the soliution I expected. Is there a support phone number I could call the game company for help?

I'm not trying to be mean, but you should consider giving up your PC and buying a Console if you're not even going to put in a minimal effort. You're not cut out for PC gaming.

PC's are complex, and there are hundreds of variables due to different hardware configurations, routers, firewalls, and other software. You can't expect the game to "do it all" for you - it's just not possible. This might be the first game you've had trouble with, but I guarantee you it won't be the last.

Calling a support number won't help - they'll tell you the same things we are.

wow... if you don't listen to what someone says about helping you in a thread you made to play a game then don't make the thread next time. Go out and find someone that isn't afraid of clicking on something with a computer to solve the problem for you and pay them as the advice givin here by Whiskey here is pretty costly and I would have charged you big time to sit here and explain it like he did.
