Also if i was you I wouldnt go mad with Anti-Alias, the lower it is the better fps you get, it doesn't really look that much better with AA on.

Gotta go by what your computer can handle...

I have all my SP graphics on high, because I still get a steady FPS and it looks great.

But I have my MP graphics lower because I would prefer a higher FPS over good looks for MP.

They just mean to put everything as high as possible. For some graphics, "Normal" is as high as they go.

As others have said, much of your eyecandy vs frame-rate will come from anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and your resolution.

you can't play cod without specular maps on....and thats that. if you do, your golden weapons will look yellow, dusty or like they've just been spraypainted with gold....and then they're not fun to use anymore....

                        Re: CoD4.. 'Best Settings'

I don't want to resurrect a dead post really, but I myself was wondering the same as the OP. I don't think is has anything to do with "bragging" about who has what, but a little information about the system wouldn't hurt. We need to realize that not everyone out here knows everything about graphics cards and their capabilities, so no need to bash a post that is only there to ask for honest information.

Now I'll ask the same, which settings would be optimal for my system with CoD4?

I have an AMD Dual Core Athlon 4200+, 64 bit 2.2Ghz processor with 3GB DDR 400 RAM and an NVIDIA 7800GT-OC video card. Running WinXP currently with SP2.

Granted my setup was premium back in Jan 2006 when I put it together, its starting to wane a bit.

I don't want to give up any detail, but I'm noticing a little sluggishness while playing CoD4 in particular. Not so much with DoD Source.

                        Any worthwhile suggestions?

Sounds like my old setup. I seem to remember having to turn the graphics down for MP quite a bit, but otherwise for SP I could crank it up and still get a decent 30-40 FPS.

You don't need high FPS to play the game well, you just need solid fps. When I am on my crap PC I always cap my fps at 50, stays there, solid, no fps lag. And that's in the red zone.

Top with 50 fps, although I have no problem getting 125 its just not solid. (Other team were med+)

The best settings.. Well, everything on highest settings with 4x aa and make sure you run 1920x1200.. as long as you have a good video card.. (they are cheap now) The ATI HD 4870 or the Nvidia GTX 260 will both run the game on its highest settings easy.. and if you dont have a 24" monitor and are running a 19" - 22" you can get away with running highest settings 4xAA and 16X AF with a 9800 and push our good FPS..

There have been a few newer games that have come out with really bad code and all looks but no gameplay like Arma 2 and even with the best Video card (HD 4870 1GB or a GTX 280) it will run the game like crap.. it did happen in the first arma to.. and they fixed it with patches but I am not a big fan of any game that comes out and runs like pure crap..

But COD MW: 2 is coming out and Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out.. we really dont need any new games right now but it will be nice.. and with the way POS games are being pushed out it looks like we will be playing these games for the next few years.. but I like it like that.. there shouldnt be a COD MW: 3 talked about the day COD MW:2 comes out.. but there will be a bunch of noobs talking about the next game rather then playing the one that just game out a day ago, and they are the ones that ruin it for us all..

Have fun with COD4, I know I am.. we have some of the best games that where ever made out right now.. COD4, TF2 and for good teamplay L4D.. and oldies but goodies like BF2 and CSS.. that many people still play.. have fun with what you have now.. its just going to get worse.. not saying there will not be a good game everyone few years but still there will be 100x more bad games then good games being pulled out of the asses of gamemakers and people will buy them, thats what really messes it up..
