High ping on shared computer?

I apparently have "Bell Sympatico High Speed" internet. However; it's not very fast. I have clocked it on mine and my parents computer at around 660 kb/s.

This slow as is, my friend averages 10 mb/s on his rogers. I noticed a problem today; whenever my parents use the internet my ping jumps a little; not usually a problem since my ping is on average around 30 when running BF. But on two occasions today my parents went on Youtube; the first time my ping jumped to about 5000, not a word of a lie. The second time it jumped to around 875. I got kicked both times for inconsistent ping in a server; resulting in total score loss near the end of a round. Slightly annoying

The internet is connected to my parents computer first; through the router than to mine. The modem is quite old; so I suspect replacing it may give us better speed and connection; ditto with the router.

So I want to ask; is there any way I can subside this problem when they use their internet; or should I just get a new ISP altogether?

I don't like connecting the internet through one computer to another... Is there any way to connect directly to the router?

My computer is directly connected to the router, but for some reason the modem is connected my parents computer, which then runs to the router; then to my computer.

6 mbs is not bad (it's what I have), but when my wife looks at online video, it tends to choke me out as well. What's happening it that my wife (and your parents) are basically sucking up all of the available bandwidth and killing your connection. I don't really think it has anything to do with the fact that your modem is connected to the computer, then the router (tho that is kinda weird), as I have the same problem and my router is connected directly to my modem.

Some routers will let you allocate bandwidth to certain IP addresses (tho I don't know exactly how to do this), and will let you set aside a certain percentage of the available bandwidth no matter what. Poke around in your router settings, and try to shave 1 mbs or so off the top for just your machine. Your parents will never notice the difference, and you won't feel it when they stream from youtube.

Sorry to tell ya, but YouTube was always and will always eat up all your bandwidth. The only way to prevent massive ping jumps is to upgrade your ISP aka get faster internet. I used to suffer from the same thing, but then we got RoadRunner High speed. Now I average around 30 Ping on servers nearby, and when my family is using YouTube I get around 50. Its not really noticeable :)

Very sure your exaggerating here. I thought for sure that the Ping "Cap" on this game was like 1027.. Even if it is higher, thats all it will display.

Not a word of a lie, it jumped to 5000, stood there for about 3 seconds of my total tab time and then dropped to the average of 400 for the kick.

The only reason it had jumped to 5000, was because they were loading the video; as that was my speculation anywho.

i once have played with a ping of 9999 so it is possible. my brother was watching something on youtube and my dad was busy with things for his job so there was no brandwith left for me.
