Crash to Desktop... please help

Hi everyone,

I just started playing BF2 again and am having this stupid problem where I can play anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and then it just crashes to the desktop. The game hangs for about a second in the middle of a map (not at a map change) then goes to a black screen and then finally to the desktop.

My system specs are on the sidebar.

I can post the dxdiag as well as further system specs if needed.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to try and eliminate this ctd?

i have the same problem but it happens hardly ever. it could be your cpu overheating and ive heard the VIA chipset causes this problem.

i just remember when it happened a lot to me on my last system i played around with my dynamic overclocking feature on my mobo and it sorted the problem. my chip was a 1500 and it had the abilty to go 11% faster when needed, i bought it down to 5% and all good.

this happens to me sometimes too...very rarely though.. run Rivatuner to see ur temps of the gpu and if its getting too hot use riva tuner to up ur gpu fan speed if not already done... make sure u have the newest drivers for ur gpu...

haha yeah dude.. here download this and tell us what ur temps are.. this program also alows u to raise ur GPU fan speed to 100% cutting ur temps down by up to 10c

also have u overclocked ur GPU?

and what type of case cooling have u got?

Currently my GPU is not overclocked.

The side of my case is actually off right now and I've had it like that for some time with the intention of trying to keep things cool since I was getting CTDs while playing wow. The case has 3 fans.

My GPU core and ambient temps are 52 and 40, respectively. That is after the computer was left alone for about 5 hours. I will post temps under load in a bit.

EDIT: I just played until it crashed and it looks like the temp peaked at 76/52. Should I try turning my fans up?

Quick question, do you run anti virus software?

I used to run AVG 7.5 for the longest time and it would consistently cause the game to crash to desktop; not just on Battlefield 2 either, on anything that was relatively hardware intensive like the Source based games.

Simply disabling auto protect was not enough, and eventually removing it entirely fixed everything.

nah see 76c is actually quite normal/good my GTX runs at about that temp and it can sometimes go up to 84c but their hot cards and can cope with a bit of heat abuse.. it sounds more like a software problem to me.

I can only say the same as the other guys; overheating. I had the same problem and lost it with a better videocard that didn't get to hot. It stays around 50 celcius now. Maybe turning down the graphicsettings will help you?

right i had this problem.

i'm not sure if this will help you but i was playing with the o/s vista and had it all the time i went onto the battlefield audio options and changed the audio render to hardware then re installed the patch and it has been working for me since. (touch wood)
