32 or 64 bit?

Im building new PC and do not know wheather to use 32 or 64 bit version of vista. i have pentium core 2 duo 2.2, which support 64 bit. 2 gigs ddr2 pc6400, and an geforce 8600GTS. would i be better off running the 32 bit version, or the 64 bit version?

You wouldn't really be able to take advantage of the 64bit version with only 2gb of ram. I would suggest 32bit until the 64bit gets better driver support. Which may be not be until games start requiring more than 2gb of ram to run well. If you play on dropping more than 2gb in your system in the future than go with 64bit. Though for gaming purposes i would suggest something stronger then an 8600gt.

I personally would say to go for 64bit, seems that thats the way technology is heading, it doesn't cost much to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit with Microsoft, but I would save your self the time and effort and go straight for 64bit.

The 8600GTS will do you just fine :)

You will need at least 4GBs of RAM to take full advantage of Vista 64bit (Ultimate is what you should put in your machine).

Just check to make sure any hardware you have is compatible along with software products. If you do not have compatible hardware/software I would suggest running the 32bit version of Vista with 4GBs of RAM. You will get 3.25GB to 3.5GBs of RAM on 32bit Windows Operating Systems.

There aren't a lot of applications out yet that take advantage of 64-bit, and quite frankly, a lot of games at the moment are having compatibility issues with Vista 64. This will improve over time, but until the consumer install base gets big enough, there won't be pressure on developers to concentrate on this.

It would help if you told us what you use your PC for most often. But I would say stick with 32 until you need to upgrade.

I wonder, I hear about complaints with 64bit vista and the only problem I've had with it was CoD2 not working properly and flash works, but not will all things.

Now, I have a laptop with 32bit vista that I just got recently and I've had many compatibility issues...

I too had wondered though about going 64bit with the lappy b/c of the processor I have and I'll eventually be putting in more ram. The first service pack should be here soon. :yay::dead: lol!

I use Vista 64 on my gaming machine (Ultimate of course) with just 2 GB of RAM, and I haven't seen any issues with it compatiblity wise (which I suppose is a miracle). I think 64 bit would be fine, and it would allow you to insert more RAM whenever you decide to upgrade without having to install the OS again so you can use all 4 GB.

As the others have said...

If your building a new PC, you might as well build it for the long run. I've heard SP1 for vista will be out soon, but I haven't had any issues with vista 64bit.

Games + Applications are only going to get better and more demanding in time, so save yourself the time and hassle and go for 64bit.

If you game a lot, and intend to buy a fairly good video card with DirectX 10 support to take advantage of great graphics (ie. games like Crysis), then go with Vista.

XP does not allow your card to take full advantage of DX10 effects without a programming "hack", and from some tech guys I've spoken to, even then the hack only simulates some aspects of DX10, but is not "true" DX10.

As others have said, Vista64 allows you to use 4GB of RAM, which will be more and more important for future gaming. Just be aware that you may encounter some compatibility issues with some games in the short run.

Im running vista64 and everythings fine, theres plenty of drivers out there now so dont worry about that.

I chose it for the long run like mentioned above, and i wanted support for my 4gb of ram. Soon enough everything will be switching over to 64 so why not get on board now.

The only problem that i may have (which involves this game) is using the mouse wheel to switch weapons. Half the time it doesnt work or when it does its very slow. The only other person i know with this problem is a guy using vista64.
