    BF2142 and dual core processors

So i heard somewhere one time that bf2142 doesnt fully utilize the abilities of dual core processors so your only able to really put half the RAM you have to use. Is this true at all? Caus i got a Dell dimension 5150 with the 2 core processor (i think 3 ghz or something like that) and i bought 2 gigs of RAM so i had 3 gigs RAM in total. So am i really only using a 1.5GB RAM when you need 2GB to run the best?

I got a 7900gs and some average Verizon DSL connection so those arent hurting me too much i think.

I mean i dont have much to complain about, my game runs pretty smooth and i probly lag less than some people but sometimes i have bad hit detection from server to server and i was wondering what i would need to run this game as best as possible.

The hardware and internet medium that translates your actions kind of pisses me off sometimes.:dead:

i dont even see the point in responding if your just going to say "oh, they are 2 different things...." Seriously. I have a computer, i play this game, but i am stupid with computers and want to figure things out that could make it so i can play on whatever population server i want with minimal to no lag. and when i say lag i mean smooth framerate (40fps at least) and good hit detection (im assuming you play this game) where when i fire nice tight bursts at targets with my AR (were not talking about being a bad shot here, two different things, you would understand.) i score hits and if a target is supposed to take X amount of hits from a particular weapon if i fire X amount of shots i will kill them when i have the red dot on thier body and am firing the gun correctly.

I understand that a large amount of things come into play when looking for good performance but

      Dell Dimension 5150
      2.66Ghz dual core processor
      7900GS
      3GB RAM
      verizon broadband

i really dont see why i should be lagging or having bad framerate at all but i still do in certain situations like on higher population servers and such. Yes i know that different things effect framerate and hit detection yes yes i know im just wondering if you would have any place to start as to how i could change my comp so hardware is never the reason that i miss or get killed. Im sorry im not Uber computer expert and you just think im stupid for asking questions but i would appreciate some help. this is legitimate.

Your system is very similar to mine. 2142 is not optimised for dual core but this won't affect gameplay. One of the cores of your CPU is more than fast enough to handle all the calculations needed to run the game. A more important component is the video card and your 7900 whilst showing its age now should still handle this game fine - I know mine does (1680x1050 and med to high settings). The game will still use all of your memory or rather as much as it needs approx 1 - 1.3gb. Your dual core will still help as other processes can run on the other core. I think the Nvidia GFX driver is helped with a dual core cpu. Your operating system should be able to offload work to the seperate cores also.

Lag is something you just have to learn to live with. You can reduce effects by choosing the server with the lowest ping on the advanced server selection tab. Close all other background services that might be using your net connection. P2P, filesharers etc.

As for accuracy - 2142 simulates gun shake and other effects. If you try and shoot someone with a Ganz whilst stood up at ten feet you'll be lucky to hit him at all due to the bullet spread. Your stance and scope effects accuracy greatly. Try shooting a wall in different stances to see with works best.

Well Alex is right. Processor and memory are completely different things.

It doesn' matter if you have a single core CPU or a dual core if you are talking about memory.
          To keep it basic:
If you run your PC on a 32 bit operating system (XP Home or XP Professional for example) you can adress up to 4 GB of memory, regardless of your CPU. On 64 Bit operationg system (i.e. XP Prof 64) you can adress more physical memory (up to 1 TB IIRC).
So your memory should be fine.

But you are correct saying BF2142 isn't utilising dual core processors. It uses both cores for the same program tasks as if it was only one core.
The trick with dual core tech is to have applications that use one core for one program task and the other core for a different program task at the same time. BF series doesn't do that.

Your lag and hit detection probs are most probably based on instable ping or bad ping at the player you are shooting at. Not much to do about that and I think all of us have the same issue from time to time.

          Cheers

Try defragmenting your hard disk. That sometimes helps.

I think what he is saying is that the game can't utilize all his RAM, which is true if you don't have Duel Channel RAM. Half of your RAM goes into maintaining the system, while the other half is allowed to work on your game. If you have Duel Channel, the RAM will leave the system to itself while the game is running, and fully devote your memory to the game.

This is something i didnt know about. So would my comp tell me what kind of RAM i have, (other than DDR2, 3 or whatever) and im assuming that you cant change this.

dual channel ram has nothing to do with what the memory is used for. All of your RAM is used for whatever purpose, if your ram is dual channel all it means is the data rate to and from your ram is doubled.
