Yup. Effects on high also has little to no impact to perfomance (just a few FPS drops).

You can tone everything down, but in order to not to hinder yourself as a pilot, you need to-

Set distance scale to 100% (to see terrain further)
Set Effects to High (for contrails)
Set Geometry to High (to see vehicles further)

The difference in FPS comes with about a -10~15 cost max.

I'm sorry, i'm not up to date with the "Top BF2 pilots"... my life doesn't revolve around BF2 quite that much.

All i know is that i can keep up with pilots on the server i play on, and at one point, it was number 1 in the UK ratings, so it's not that bad

Yet you still claim to be able to keep up with "experienced pilots". Mhm...

Im sure the stats show a lot of skill, especially when every pilot worth his salt usually has his way with the top 10 pilots (in terms of stats).

The problem is that you claim to be "able", with your mouse, without actually having any idea what an "experienced pilot" even is. And "experienced pilot" doesnt really get challenged by someone with a 4:1 KDR in jets.

Waah waah and others. I fly with a mouse and keyboard and not shining light up my own rear i do a crap good job with it.

As if the magical joystick makes you perform better in the jet, its how you fly not what you fly with. Stats or not, mouse and keyboard is simpler for myself.

and set the different camera views on your mouse or joystick!! you don't want to be reaching over to the F9 - F12 keys just to change the camera, especially once you start switching cameras every few seconds.

its about getting used to how the hitboxes work, you can follow a jet with a mouse or joystick but u wont kill it if u dont know where to shoot at at very moment and at that speed

I fly with metallica often and Im just amazed at him lol, its a piece of cake for him, he never even uses missiles, he does it all with a canon, you only need a joystick for dodging imo but if ur a smart pilot you wont need to dodge coz you'll know how to stay out of that situation so yea, it doesn't matter what you use as long as you know what ur doing

Im not that good but id probably beat allot of mouse users, if I really had the patience Id probably stay alive for the whole round against a good joystick pilot

People talking aload of crap, have these joystick companys paid you all off or summat. Frig me, its a joystick not a magic wand. I play just as good if not better than a joystick user.

You dont need a joystick for squat! its just another little addon to your computer.

Tell you what we will put your theory to the test, 2moro, choose a server & a time add my xfire. This is an open challenge to any joystick user. Me Vs them, Mouse Vs Joystick, we'll put this to rest once and for all.

I have a 19-1 ratio in a jet with 42,000 kills using a joystick. Im not here to get in that joystick mouse debate. All can say is I do much better with a joystick and I have tried the mouse. Kudos to anyone who can use a mouse and have a decent kill/death ratio.

To the original poster, heres a few tips and i realize some of them have been posted. Dont use your afterburners till you need them. Ie, youre being chased, youre chasing someone, or youre evading an IGLA. Lets take wake for example, youre in an F35 and the game begins. Go up to about 500M to the left of the map, youre coming around to the MEC airstrip from the west. Go in and bomb the airstrip for 3 or 4 kills where the J10 spawns. Come around and shoot the J10 that spawns. Go high after its down and start looking for the other J10. Bad news is the MEC team has "spotted" you after the kill on the J10 and youll show up as a blinking red marker for a good 8 seconds. The more afterburner you have and the higher you are will ensure survival if the J10 comes after you before you have spotted him. During the rest of the game, the key is to have the height you need to get away and to spot them before youre spotted. Getting away from a J10 is just a matter of making a stratorun. Just turning wont do it. Keep checking behind you at all times.

As a J10 pilot on wake, your job is much easier. After take off, hunt down their initial F35 so your other J10 can get up. There are some good F35 pilots out there, but for the most part, an average J10 pilot can kill an experienced F35 pilot. The F35 is a magnet for missles and at least for me, is really easy to kill.....unless hes making a stratorun. There is no need for me to follow an F35 into outerspace. Once i see a pilot do that, I make a note to myself that he prolly has skill and I need to be checking my six more often. Once he makes that stratorun or goes into outerspace, I will break off the attack and concentrate on other targets. But, I will fly a tad higher and keep an eye out for him especially noting any "spots" my teamates give.

There is a technique you can try practicing at in single player for evading. Do 2 Immelman turns....but on the second Immelman, only do 1/2 of it and go straight up....cut the engine off above 600M....youll go up out of control up to about 1200M. If you have gone straight up...you wont go out of bounds, youll float back to earth.

Some interesting ideas, and some asinine comments, but no one has actually shared any insight into what the advantages and disadvantages of a joystick are.

I've been playing this game for a long time, and I quite remmeber trying to fly without a joystick both before and after I learned to fly well.

Obviously it's "simpler" to use the mouse in the sense that the freelook view is easily accessible, and nothing must be configured, reconfigured, or purchased.

I suppose it would be easier to aim the jet at a target with a mouse, considering how much mouse experience the average battlefielder has accumulated. also, because motion of the mouse does not cause continuous motion, finer course corrections can be made. However, holding a turn for a period of time would be just about impossible. I can imagine flying somewhat effectively with the mouse although I haven't tried in anything other than a helo.

Keys are quite opposite of the mouse as holding a key causes continuous movement and thus, a turn can be held indefinately. But aiming with those keys is sloppy at best; they are not analog. So to simulate the motion of a jet with it's joystick held at 5 o'clock, one would have to hold DOWN, and tap RIGHT at a specific interval. This complexity causes one to constantly focus on the plastic at their fingertips.

A joystick is basically analog keys with a handle. The advantage over the arrow keys is quite obvious to the point that the keys are always inferior.

A mouse however does have an advantage over the joystick being that it is natively more acurate, but there are other disadvantages:

Most joysticks come with a throttle that can be set at any speed and manipulated on the fly. This is extremely useful in dogfights and other applications.

Joysticks tend to have a lot of buttons on the handle which can usually be set to pan left/right. With this configuration, a pilot can fly with one hand for perios of time when the throttle is not being changed. This also allows for easy switching of views.

Also, I see everyone refferencing the altitude readout as feet. Although I can't remember my direct evidence, I remember coming to the conclusion that altitude is measured in meters.

It might also be important to note that I usually fly the F35 and find the J10 to handle like a shopping-cart.

                                Hope this helps.
