Ok hit the start button on the bottom left of the screen,it should say "Start",a menu should pop up,look for "run" it should be very visible,click the box that says "Run" a box will pop up,in this box you want to type dxdiag,it will display information on your computer.

As for the downloads barely any except for patches which are about 200 meg, but you only need to do that every 2 or 3 months (when a new patch is released).

If not, answer these questions:
How old is your computer?
Did you buy it from Dell, HP, or any company?
If so, what is the model name?

When you get the dxdiag information, copy the text from the "System, Display, and Sound" tabs, and paste it here for us to examine. This will give us a theoretical idea of how well your PC will run the game.

But, as others have said, download the free single-player demo, install it on your PC, and try to play it. This will give you a more practical example of how the final game will run (the final game will actually run a bit better than the demo, because it has been more optimized).

That's the place to start then...

Right click anywhere on your desktop, then go to Properties, then Settings Tab and in that, click Advanced.

It should give you a window with a couple of tab at the top, one of them should be named after your GFX card.

For the rest, go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance and then System. It should give you the general information about your system, like the OS (operating system), the name of the processor, how much RAM the PC has.

CoD4 is very low in requirements, unless you want to play it at uber shiny GFX (graphics) settings.

I can play fine on high (not highest) with a 2.2ghz single core processor, 2 GB RAM and 2X6800GT but I turn it down almost all the way and tweak the settings for gameplay advantages (call me lame then).

I would recommend downloading the demo first, it's a pretty good way to find out if your system can run the game, but be aware that in the demo, you are playing a night mission and on lower end machines, you will notice a dent in FPS when you play daytime missions or maps in multiplayer (most of them are daytime).

As for the download, I assume you are atlking about downloading the game (?). Usually, you buy a copy of it in a video game shop or have it delivered to you or I think you can download it from Steam.

You have to download a few patches for the game before you can play online, but that's usually a piece of cake, using the ingame download button. (You only have to worry about this once you have the game)
