    Worth it?

Ok well ive played the UT3 Demo and thought it was immense. I also saw on play.com the limited edition of UT3 is only 18 Quid with free delivery.

    So...

Is it worth me getting it? Is there a fairly decent amount of players online?

ive never played any UT3 games but would like to satrt...

Well, the multiplayer isn't as populated as say... BF2 or COD4, but there's enough to keep you occupied. I'd say maybe 5 - 10 full servers for each game mode. What I really like, though, is that the bots can get pretty good if you play around with the settings. Even if you don't feel like playing online, you can still have fun with the bots. Plus, you can download maps, mutators, game modes, character models, etc. I'm really glad I got it for xmas

the map editor is fun, especially once you know how to use it. I made a level that is identical to my house (on the inside, not out) :p

i think that's mainly because it's a first-ever for PS3 (and maybe for any console). the game is incredible when it comes to graphics and gameplay and you can even download custom mods for the PS3 version. things like that have been around for the PC for years now, so yeah I agree it is a much bigger deal on the PS3, but it's equally as fun on both system. i've even heard rumors of cross-platform once it's released for 360

and no problem hellsent. I was in the same situation as you before xmas. I didn't know if I wanted cod4, or UT3. i decided to go with UT3, especially since I found the demo of it way more fun than the cod4 demo. I don't regret getting it at all and I play it almost every day. for me, it was worth the $50. this is also the first unreal tournament game i've ever played. :p

I was expecting a much bigger following on PC.

The modding community alone should have ensured that.
              So what happened here?

I got UT3, Crysis and COD4. COD4 is fantastic multiplayer...but I haven't given UT3 a proper go yet. Servers are never populated...and the type of players that prefer good team-based FPS are all COD nuts. Or worse. CSS.

It was released into a saturated market and by the look of it will be buried unless some form of marketing is done quickly to give some life into the game. It's down in price across the board here in the UK so I'm still suprised that it hasn't picked up. I've got to say I've bought it but never really played it a lot because of the amount of other FPS games that came out before Christmas.

CoD4, Crysis, ET:QW, UT3. Big Stellar titles forcing the community to split.

Been playing UT3 for a few days straight and it`s like the good old UTs. Only majority of the people don`t play for the team but just want to get the sniper/walker/raptor and wtfpwn.
On some maps and gamemodes, even a single newbie on a team can **** the whole game up which is pretty annoying. I don`t know how many times I`ve left my defense post for 5 seconds to collect some powerups only to see an enemy tiptoe past a clueless friendly, piss in his face, lol in our face, then take the flag.

But yeah, for a UT game, it has a criminally small playerbase atm. Epic being complete pricks doesn`t help either.

i can gesture that UT3 wasnt as popular as it shouldve been for several reasons

firstly a lot of diehard ut fans like me, play UT3 and just think why?

Less maps, less game modes, a horrible console influence and weapons that are so stupidly unbalanced its unreal (lol)

The patches have improved it somewhat but I'll be waiting for a few more and some mods before I reinstall it and play again

They even frikin ruined my instagib fun + no face = ghey

Epic turned from being one of the best devs in the industry to one of the worst imo...

less maps? The game came with 40 maps which is more than the past UT's.

Bad weapon balance? Each weapon has an area where they excel better than others. That does not make them unbalanced.

The game is worth buying and playing. Gameplay is hectic and fast paced. The user community has responded incredibly. There are well over 100 plus user maps and a ton of mods to boot. What are people waiting for?

                            The minigun???

I can remember booting up 2k4 and spending ages playing more maps than I could handle, not to mention awesome game mods like assault

Once I got through the dam UI to select the map in UT3, I thought, where the hell are they all. Thats nothing against the game really, cos custom maps are awlays awesome but for Epic to be such pricks is beyond me

Its a good game and all but I found it lacking

Landodger, I've been active in several UT communities for a long time, and I don't think people like you are giving the game a fair chance.
For instance, how is a menu interface supposed to spoil the fun of a game for anyone? For me it's mostly: boot up game, spend 2-5 minutes in menu, spend 30-90 minutes in game.

Unbalanced weapons is a question of preference really. In previous UT's, hitscan (instant-hit weapons like sniper, shock rifle, enforcer, for newcomers) was very dominant. High-level play was almost always pecking away at eachother with lightning gun+shock rifle/combo to finish off from long distance. Close quarters battles were rare, if existent at all. The shield gun only made matters worse.

Fact is: UT3 is quite different, in that the Rocker Launcher, Flak and especially Goop-gun have an actual use now. Whether you like that is up to you, but it's not that hard to adjust to and calling the weapons unbalanced because you haven't adjusted yet is the easy way out.
They're actually more balanced if anything.

The player numbers are quite horrible yeah, but I haven't had a single experience when I couldn't find a populated, well-pinging TDM server after dinner. (I play mostly TDM/DM and 1on1, I've heard and seen there are even more warfare/vctf servers up and active).
I expect the game to pick up though. The current popularity on the PS3 has to at least bring SOME people in to the game on PC. Also, Midway have started advertising .. FINALLY ... and that should help as well. Tournaments are already underway, the second patch has improved on many of UT3's weak points, and lots of old-timers from past UT's are coming back to this game after they had a little fun in CoD4 and TF2.

The fact is, arena shooters like UT3 are not popular anymore. Everyone wants the flashy and 'realistic' games nowadays, like Halo 3, CoD4, Crysis, etc.
And I'm sorry to say so if it offends anyone, but most FPS games nowadays are TERRIBLY dumbed-down, consolified and noobified. They're games that anyone can pick up, play for 5 minutes and kill 30 people in 10 minutes.

This is EXACTLY why I play UT3. The game is fast, furious, balanced, action-packed, and most of all - pure. It's arena FPS at it's best.
If you're looking for an FPS game that is awesome to play now, and will still be awesome to play in 2 years, this is the one.
It's challenging, for some even hard, to get into and become good at, but once you do it's the most dynamic game you'll ever experience.

I've been playing UT games since UT99, been playing UT2k4 in several clans, and have actively played UT3 in the semi-pro circuit since launch, and I still improve every day. That is the real beauty of the game.

                              --

To anyone still in doubt whether they should buy UT3: DO IT.
You won't regret it. It's the best game almost noone is playing :)
Still, the people that do play it are experienced, friendly, dedicated and generally a very mature community devoid of any zOMG HAX()RZZZZ yelling idiots. They'll be willing to give hints to get you on your way to becoming a tournament veteran in no time
                              See you in the arena!
