Alright. This is kind of a rant, and kind of what I really think is going on.
Three-ish years ago when CS:S and BF2 were coming out the FPS genre was at the top of it's game. The competitive scenes for those two games evolved quickly and were simply phenomal. The player base was monstrous! Call of Duty 2 was another dominant and rich game.
Then BF2142 came out and sank like a rock. Since then there have been more and more so called "BF2 killers" etc...
But, really. What have Bioshock, Quake Wars, TF2, etc... amounted to? Nothing. BF2, CoD2, and CS:S still remained the top games.
Call of Duty 4 was the one exception, as top gaming teams and many players moved to it. However, I do not believe it has the longevity or depth of either BF2 or CSS.
The FPS genre is getting fragmented. There are the story gamers (Bioshock), the pro gamers (CS:S), the team gamers (ETQW), the graphics junkies (Crysis), the clan gamers (BF2), and the visual gamers (CoD4).
FPS games are not drawing large crowds, I know a breakdown of gaming monolopy is not bad, but with the FPS gaming community fragmented it is killing everything. BF2, CSS, and CoD2 are just about out of life- but still drawing good gamers and letting people enjoy lots of fun times. CoD4 has a bit of a monolopy with tons of competition and pubbing, but it can't last for long.
The FPS genre is on the fail.
