Unbelievable performance problems!

Hi.

I haven't been playing this game for over a year now, apart from a few hours now and then the last few weeks.

What I've noticed, is that I'm experiencing extreme performance problems these days, and I can't seem to solve it. The gameplay lags/stutters terribly - and it's definitely not my ping causing this.

The game runs OK (but not flawless) on Infantry Only servers, but when I play with vehicles, it's so bad that it's almost unplayable...

Back when I used to be a regular, I was running two 7800GT's in SLi mode, now I'm running only 1 - but I don't think that's the issue here. You see, I used to run in 1280x1024@75, with AA and AF maxed out, and all detail settings on High. I never had any problems like I do now.
Now I play at 1024x768@75, with AF turned off and AA set to 2x - and all detail settings on low. And still, it's unplayable!

You can see my system specs in my signature. I'm currently using a BenQ 20" LCD screen.

I've tried pretty much everything I could think of, including everything listed under the topic Problem - Slow/Stuttering performance in Battlefield 2 in the BF2 Community Tech FAQ (V8) - READ THIS FIRST!!!! thread. The only things that seemes to boost performance a little from that list, was to rename BF2.exe, as well as turning VSync on.

Also, I formatted just a month ago.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I hope someone can help...

Turn the monitor frequency down to 60hz, not 75hz and make sure Vsync is enabled if tearing occurs.

Yeah, Alex is right. If your refresh rate is to high for the monitor it may cause a stuttering effect, I tried mine (samsung syncmaster 19") at 75 and it was to high because when I joined a server I was getting like 5 fps, I switched back to 60 and it was working better than ever.

I just had a look at my settings, and appaerently it IS running in 60Hz...

Does anyone know what else could be wrong? I miss being able to fight with vehicles

Can't help but think this has something to do with SLI. Does SLI require any special cofiguration? And if so are these options turned off. Might be worth re-installing the Video drivers.

As far as I know SLI doesn't require any special configuration (other than enabling it in the nVidia control panel). However, this is irrelevant with regards to my problems, as I'm currently running with just one card (as explained in the first post). I've formatted and installed video drivers with only this one card.

It might be a resource issue. Next time this happens try ATL+TAB run task manager and see if your CPU is taken over by any processes and terminate the program . I've had a problem like this myself.

lol why would you advise him to do that, having the refresh rate higher is better for gaming and also for his health.

I suggest to ignore what Alex advises and to keep your refresh rate at its highest possible. Update your gfx, sound & motherboard drivers, update PB manually, scan your pc for viruses, malware, adware & any other malicious code, defrag your hdd.

Also, turning vsync on may help with the tearing but will greatly reduce your frame rate and i have also heard SLI is actually slower than running one card unless your running two 8800GT's that is.

Vsync puts the frame rates at the screens refresh rate. So, it's forcing it to draw the picture more, hence lag.

Nope, it's just unproductive saying things that aren't true. Whilst it may help with your eye site and make the game look slightly nicer.

But, it canes the graphics card, especially an old 7800gtx which just about does BF2 max graphics on 60hz.

A 7800GTX is a very good graphics card still, i am able to play BF2 @1280x1024 on a 128MB Geforece 6600GT all on high at a stable 30fps.

So no, i disagree with you there, the gfx card in question is perfectly capable of playing BF2 on full.

I smell BS.Im sorry, but a 6600gt won't play Bf2 all high with 8x AA at 1280x1024, my 7600gt only just managed it.

I'm not denying the 7800gtx is a good card, it just won't play all high at 75hz and Vsync. At 60hz, yes, but not 75.

No, i just suspect your not telling the whole truth. People like to big up their own hardware beyond it's own abilities sometimes
