Does anyone do this? It's quite annoying to the enemy if done right. You need at least 2 cooperating people and one more if you want the gunship at full effectiveness.
1) Squad leader + member get in gunship, flies to back flag at high altitude to avoid enemies.
2) SL jumps out over back base.
3) If SL was pilot, gunship gunner quickly changes seats, flies back to friendly territory and picks up new gunner.
4) SL puts down beacon in back base and attempts to cap with squad.
or
4) Steal a vehicle from enemy base!
I was able to take both gunships from EU in Suez canal and put a beacon in their back base. First gunship was taken with the above method, second we decided to 'sacrifice' the PAC gunship to take the other EU one. Total air dominance!
