    I need help being Commander.

I have about 4 hours as Commander, but I still have problems. When someone yells out "I need supplies!", I look at his name as it scrolls by, then I end up clicking on each squad in turn looking for the guy's name so that I know where to drop them. Then I try to find that number in green on my Commander screen before finally dropping the supplies. There must be a better way.

Same for other requests, like UAV. Also, I have difficulty finding exactly where squads are. For instance, I may have 5 squads, one of which is a lone-wolf squad leader flying around in a gunship. When I click on that guy's name, the other green guys on my Commander screen remain green. I have to find the correct number, and sometimes I just can't find it. Is there a way to have the squad in question highlighted as soon as I click on it in the drop down menu? I end up giving lame orders telling the wrong squad to cap a silo on the other side of the battlefield. Or else I give two consecutive contradictory orders to the same squad.

There is a guide somewhere on this site, but the links to it I have found via searching no longer work.

    Thanks,
    DD.

When someone says that, they need to have their squad leader request it, so it'll show up on the map. All you'll have to do then is click on the supplies or UAV icon and select "Accept". If you happen to be watching the map when a squad member requests the item, their icon SHOULD be flashing.

To select individual squads, just clik on the squad's line in the commander's menu, and it should highlight everyone in that squad on the map.

I don't think the selected squad is always highlighted correctly on the commander's map. I have no real proof of that other than when I select different squads sometimes the same players stay highlighted. You can be pretty sure that the squad leader is where his number says he is.

If you rank is not at least a captain or major, stay in the squad. Recently I was surprised to see a recruit as commander when I joned the game. At that point, I knew our side was in trouble. That commander wasn't commanding long. With lots of players, a commander commands, they don't fight. Smaller maps are another story.

When commanding, a soldier's icon changes color when they need something or spot something. The most important thing you need to do is start spotting enemies for your troops. Some sqauds leader don't need to be managed while other do, depends on the battle and map. The commander sees the overall battlefield who decides where the resources are needed most.

The only way to get better at commanding is to command, practice, practice, practice. Or you can practice commanding in single player game to get the hang of it first with no pressure until you feel more comfortable.

That's a hell of a blanket statement. I've been playing BF2142 since it was released and I'm only a Warrent Officer Silver and I've commanded since the game came out.

True, I'll give you that point. I've seen some great commanders with low rank and a lot not that great. I've also seen a lot of commanders with high rank not so great and alot that are great. I enjoy commanding, it all depends on the flow of the game.

The point I was making is that commanders command they don't fight or fly, of course that depends on how many are playing, and more often than not I see the low rank commanders still playing on the battlefield instead of commanding. It takes practice, if you are a warrent officer in command, then command, there is no need to fight on the battlefield, you have squads for that. If your emp, orbital, or tracking are broken, drop a crate next to it and it will fix itself in a minute. Defending your own resources is important.

Regardless of rank in any case, Commanders Command, they don't fight or fly. That's all I'm saying. With higher rank, the more experience you'll have with a better chance of being approved as commander.

PS. What shocked me that started all this was when I saw a recruit in command when I joined a game, that is just too low to command. I guess no one else applied with a higher rank.

Yeah except I have noticed many low ranked soldiers recently with fantastic skills. Like single blow knifing, go to one knee 3-shot bursting head shots, and out-of-this-world flying skills. My assumption is that some Brigs have started new soldiers, and are quickly ranking up. So your noob may not have been a noob after all.

Also, to pat myself on the back, my Commanding skills have dramatically improved since watching that CptainCrunch vid. I rarely lose when I play commander now, and almost always get the gold star. I keep all my walkers supplied, and save EMP + Orbital to take out enemy walkers. I have learned that it is actually good to always have a squad defending your second closest cap to the main action, even though most of the time squad leaders don't want to do that. Amazing how many potential break-outs in Camp Gib have been averted just by leaving two or three guys behind the action. In a recent game, one squad leader who followed every order ended up with 68 Teamwork points, and the gold star. That was worth 2000 points for his Valorous ribbon, and he never needed to repair Titan guns nor take out enemy Titan guns. Oh, and I am a Lieutenant so we don't all need to be Captains or above :-)

Now CaptCrunch, for some anti-commander secrets & tactics(If you don't know then already), great vid by the way.

By destroying a commander asset you deny the commander the use of them, but if you weaken them(where they are on fire) it affects their recharge time, each asset is diffrent the average is 10-25 seconds additional recharge time. The best ways to take out a commander asset is with RDX or with gunship tow missles(TV). Your supply crates used to repair your assets also reload enemies with RDX.

If sat track & UAV is not available yet, you can spot an area where you suspect and enemy might be, if no one is there it will show as a question mark, if some one is there the enemy unit will show up on minimap.

You can talk to the sqaud leader(voip) by pressing "b"(default), this is usefull if you see a red dot that doesn't move, you can let a certain sqaud know if they want a knife kill, where the enemy commander is. Also its real fun to orbital strike the commander.

Also, red dots(sat track) are one of several thing, more then likely are an enemy unit, but red dots also show up as several other things as well, sniper ghost, sentry gun and sqaud beacon. You can find out for sure by zooming in "N" is default for this.

Your emp strike & orbital strike(not present on titan games) does not affect enemy commander assets or the enemy titan.

Don't ask a sqaud to repair an asset is they don't have a engineer present in the a sqaud. Check sqaud list.

The sqaud menu also shows what vehicle is being used as well as what the sqaud members units are and what they have.

It's also useful to let sqauds know either by voip or text that if the follow your orders is points for them, I wouldn't mention the your points part though, most are out for themselves.

You cannot see enemy commander assets on the map screen, you have to zoom in to see them.

^ Good Tips, except I would NEVER ask a squad to repair my assets. Assuming you aren't a fighting commander, there is no reason for you to play any class other than Engineer. Repair your own assets! If there are no enemies near your assets, then you can drop a supply crate, but if there are enemies near your assets then you should neutralize THEN supply crate/repair. I LOVE knifing commanders while they repair their own assets :p

Agreed, but if the coaste is clear, and there is a engineer waiting for a vehicle to appear, why not use them. Plus if they do repair them, the sqaud leader gets a point(if sqaud leader acknowldedge order) and the unit repairing gets a repair point and a sqaud succes point. Most times I repair myself or supply drop repair them. (I play engineer when commanding as well)

By the way, when not playing commander I find it very benificail to leave an apm(unseen of course) or a unexploded RDX, when I destroy a commander asset, for people just like you!

If I kill you before I go to repair, your RDX can't touch me. APM will probably get me though :p

Fingulfin, I love your clan, you guys have a good sense of humor!

Funny story, I ran across a few of the L13 guys the other day, someone was accusing one of them of hacking, and me with my little smart @$# mouth had to open it,
                            My exact comment was:
"I know the L13 clan hacks, I've been to one of their BBQ's, and watched all of them hack a steak to peices"

LOL, the little noob accusing them L13 guy didn't have much more to say after that!

Sending a squad to repair you own assets is unnecessary. They can if they want to, it's their choice. Rather, do it yourself instead or drop a crate. Take out the sniper first though.

On the other side as a sniper, I like it when commanders drop the crates on their own assets, makes resuppling much easier for the next round of destruction instead of bothering my own commander when asking for a supply drop in enemy territory who never does.
