    Multiplayer FPS Problem.

    Hey all
First of all my pc specs:
    Amd 5600+ x2
    2900xt 512/512
    2Gb ram

As u can se my pc is quite powerful and cod4 should work on it rly well,in SP it rly does, everything maxed and no lag,but Mp is rly bad.If I try play with everything maxed out I get 50 fps (that should be enough) but some strange lag pisses me off,its like this:I play and i have 50fps then some weard "lag wave" comes and my fps drops to like 30 after 1 sec its again 50 fps,and it happens every 10 secs. That makes playing rly uncomfortable, anyone who could help? :)

your cpu is holding you back.

when i had my 8800gtx hooked up with my old 4200+ x2 (am2) cpu and the cpu was overclocked to 2.7. it would not do that well online. i was still get decent frame rates but not that good.

once i got my core 2 duo OOOO MY. trust me. get a core 2 duo. its worth every penny. it was holding back my 8800gtx SOOOO MUCH.

    try doing this.
    seta com_maxfps "0"

limits your fps (frames per second) on (1) or off (0) to have unlimited

type that into the consle. it will unlock the fps from being capped at 80. its kinda like vsync so it will hold you back a little. it should help your framerates online

u had 4200 x2 and I have 5600+ x2,big diffrence imo,and even then tell me why SP works for me like in a dream?
I see u have E6750 now,i looked at the bencmarks and my 5600+ goes almost equaly to yours 6750,so i dont think its a proc problem......
but hey maybe I can fix that problem by overclocking my proc and gpu?

Have you tried manually updating punkbuster? If PB is trying to update in-game it could lag you.

You could also temporarily disable antivirus, firewall and any internet security programs to see if any of that fixes it.

I have almost the exact same problem with my setup. Mine isn't quite as powerful, but what makes it really strange is that the screen resolution and texture settings make no difference. I will get about 43 fps for the first 3 mins of the game then I get those lag waves he was talking about about every 10 seconds. I have left task manager open in the background and I don't even get 100% cpu utilization. I have tried 800x600 low textures, I have tried to optimal settings button, same effect. I have set the graphics all the way up and I get the same problem. Smooth for 2-3 mins then waves of lag. It drops down to 8-9 fps then back up again.

Using a wireless connection to get online?

You have programs in the background that might be scanning incoming packets? (Virus scans)

            Scandisk/defrag your harddrive lately?

Cleared out the Windows temp folder in a while?

I have an AMD X2 5000+ (2.6 GHz) and have never had any lag what so ever in CoD4 MP. It runs smoothly at around 70-80 FPS and rarely drops below. I have a 8800 GTS which affects the FPS obviously but hey, I'm just saying.

I'd guess it's connection issues, or if you keep MSN etc running in the background while playing a game (which you never ever should do since MSN needs a lot of computer power alone).

              Xfire and such are exceptions

Actually, Im glad you brought that up, Iquere, Xfire caused the same 10 second lag for me, so I turn it off.

Check that background stuff as well. Another person had a problem and I told him to turn off Xfire, he thought I was nuts. He did EVERYTHING but that. Finally after two hours of trial/error, he did it. Problem went away.

Xfire, though a cool tool, does some downloads in the background and who knows what else. If you have a touchy internet connection, it will cause issues for sure.

I had the same problem, but for me it was my AV scanning my game files.

Im having the same issues with my MP. I'm running Athlon X2 6400+ 3.21ghz, Geforce 8600 GT, 4 gig ram. I cant quite figure out whats causing the lag issues. My SP is running awesome but MP is unplayable. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I'm not sure where to go from here.

So I cleaned my temp folder, I don't have any strange processes running and I turned my AV off. Still having the same problem. What is so weird is that for the first like 2-3 mins of gameplay it is lag free, then i get lag waves every 10 seconds or so after that. I noticed that it seems to be only people with AMD processors. Strange. I also manually updated my PB, just in case that was the problem, no luck.

Yours sounds like overheating. How is the ventilation on your computer? Have you cleaned it out with a can-o-air lately?

I had the exact same problem on BF2. I cleaned out the computer case and installed fans and it fixed it right up.
