How much independance do missiles have?

Been doing quite a bit of jet flying of late so still trying to get used to some of the slightly stranger things that happen whilst doing this. The two issues I have problems with at the moment is the daft air physics that occur when you go over a certain height, that's just plain weird.

The thing that's giving me trouble at the second just now is missiles. Last night I was on Dalian Plant in the J10, flying in to hit the American attack chopper, got a good solid lock and launched a volley of four or five missiles before he managed to get some flares off. Iam thinking a certain kill here, break left and after burn off only to be encountered with the message 'team vehicle damage'.

Their where no team vehicles in weapons lock range and I didn't get the kill so what the heck happened? Did the missiles go off and find a near by vehicle I maybe didn't spot?

Those strange altitude effects are an escape rope from the J-10 on your ***!

    That's my subtle tip

Yeah I noticed that it seems to happen when Iam chasing down an F-35B in a J10. The problem I have is that for some reason whilst I am up there trying to regain control the aircraft has a tendency to migrate towards the no go regions of the map.

I dunno maybe I am too used to being able to do Mach 2 at 55,000Ft in Fs2004

If the missiles pass their primary target, they are still "live" and are actively seeking for a new one. But this time, somehow their field of vision becomes larger, and pretty much anything within 375 metre range is in danger. The missiles have a 10 second lifespan.

"Up there", missiles have a good connectivity because of the "daft air", the jets turn radius becomes significantly larger.

When you reach about 400ft-500ft you need to flip from vertical to horizontal. Due to your speed and physics, by the time you have achieved that, you'll be between 600ft-700ft.

This is the sweet spot where you can fly very fast and make ultra sharp turns. The J10 doesn't know what's hit it or where you are. They usually carry on vertically and end up out of bounds.

It takes time to learn when to go horizontal, as there is a particular point to do it as so to hit that sweet spot and not go out of bounds.

The easiest way is to fly up and just loop upside down and roll straight. That seems to put off the first 4 missiles in itself, it seems the last two always chase you no matter what you do.

if you kill a vehicle and the resulting explosion damages one of your team vehicles or players it causes ff incidents. If you actually did hit and kill the chopper it is possible that the chopper crew ejected before they died and the wreckage damaged a team vehicle.
in the future, gun the choppers, don't waste your missiles. aim at the base of the rotor or cockpit and it will give you a quick kill.

Yeah I know for a fact I didn't get the kill because I hit the rear view button and saw the chopper recover from it's evasive moves. As for gunning the choppers well I learned some nice stuff last night. A combination of the stuff you guys have told me and a combo of getting my *** kicked by a guy in a F35B whilst I was in a J10 told me.

A). I don't fly high enough, I hate the fact that when you get to a certain height you can't see anything on the ground. This combined with the constrains of the maps is a little disorientating .
B). My attack angle is all wrong.

From this I've learned and please correct me if I am wrong.

Fly high, use the map to orientate your attack runs on spawns. Dive in at a steep angle of attack, use the gun even if you can't see any obvious targets. When you get a target gun at it release the bombs and then pull up and blast back in to the air.

Missiles have a 30 degree field of view and become "live" a few dozen milliseconds after the launch. As such, even if youre locked on to the chopper, and release the missiles, if the chopper is out of the 30 degree cone by the time the missile becomes "live", it will not even engage the chopper. Missiles work best when shot from a distance.

If youre in a J10, and youre fighting against F35B, and if theres a solid dogfight, try to maximise on horizontal turns. F35B, especially on low altitudes, can NOT keep up with the J10 if youre making flat turns. If you must do loops, dont let the F35B catch you while you "change turns", it opens a perfect missile shot opportunity. Try to maximise off solid loops/turns.

Learn how to spot, rear and front. Many smart F35B pilots like to spot you out, disengage, make you feel safe and come back in a few seconds. I know I do that.

Learn where and when to capitalise on strenghts and weaknesses. This should help you

                    (shameless selfpromotion)

Since youre getting killed by F35Bs, the mistake youre probably making, is choosing very bad evasion maneuvers. DONT switch maneuvers if hes lined up behind you, switch maneuvers when you know for sure, that hes going to have to change his, to keep up with you. You can then go for scissors or vector roll from there (scissors, when you turn and fly into each other, you turn to the right, and then to the left, and hes turning a whole period behind you, while not being in line with you)

Flying without understanding what your maneuver does, will most certainly kill you.

If you're getting killed repeatedly by an F35 while you're in a J10, try taking off the ground.

Camper, if youre in the J10, and think that jerking the stick around the place is a good way to lose a 1000 hour, flyby wielding, 1 vs 1 hardened veteran dogfighter, then you can only really fly in circles, at 100 feet altitude. Hehe.

Chris, you can probably count the number of such pilots on the fingers of your hands :)

Evasion wasn't so much the problem on the opportunities that I had a chance to evade I was able to. The problem was he was quite sneaky. He was clearly flying very high and spotting targets before dropping down and having at them. What he seemed to do was drop down with the bomb selected get behind me then open fire with the gun at real close range before switching to missile.

The problem wasn't evading it was me doing flat straight runs from base to target giving him a chance to get in behind me.

                              Circles eh

I remember on kashan desert.. waited 20 mins for a mec bomber to spawn then i fianlly get in and a f-16 chases me around our base while my team in my base just stares and starts swearing at me over voip to go and bomb something, i flew in a circle for about 5 minutes before someone told me that it was mobile AA locking onto me and they had blown the f-16 already like 4 minutes ago..

then i absolutely unloaded all my bullets and missiles and bombs onto the AA
