I honestly don't get SMGs. I got the silencer on my MP5 and one other but honestly it took forEVER! I just can't figure them out. By the time I get close enough to be effective I either have 500 snipers on me or someone's assault rifle/LMG has already owned me through the wall. The only time I have used the MP5 to any effect is spray&pray in a crowded hallway. I read the "SMG guide" that was posted but everything said in there applies to pretty much every gun except the ARs have more range and go through more walls. Am I missing something or is there just not a great niche for them?
SMGs? Am I missing something?

Well I'll give you what I think, since I'm an avid SMG user. The SMG is used for close combat yes, but if you have a red dot scope for the MP5, you can hit targets across the map. And the more you use them and get their challenges done, the steady the aim. My MP5 has no movement when I use my sights. The silencer is good for when you really get the hang of your weapon, and you wish to be stealthy. I use silencer and dead silence perk because I can't stand to hear myself walk or shoot. But it's preference really.
My only real advice to give you is, that even if you get frustrated with it, keep using it. Or switch to another gun, Variety is good, but find what YOU like, and get good with it. The MP5 is one of the better guns in this game. So just use it, try it with different attachments, and perks and see what helps you. You will get good with it eventually. -

What perks would you suggest? I tried the UAV jammer with the silencer and the aim boosting perk but it seems like everyone owned me with stopping power or the wall penetration. Are there any good combos for me to get used to?Comment

What I tend to use is Bandolier (for ammo) Sleight of hands (fast reload) and Dead Silence so I can run around fast and deadly but silently. It tends to work for me, but some people find great success with the UAV jammer Silencer and Dead Silence. And the Steady Aim one for better aim is only for when firing from the hip. Like not using your sights. So drop it unless you tend to spray and pray.Comment

till you get the hang of the silencer stopping power may prove usefull as it should increase its effective rangeComment

Use Stopping Power and Steady Aim.
The MP5 already fires fast enough and reloads quick so no need for sleight of hand or double tap, some extra bullet power however is always welcome. Steady Aim is pretty much the only useful perk from the third tier and it will help as you will use the MP5 mostly in close combat situations where you don't have time or don't need to aim down the sights. Unlike TSlaw said, it doesn't get more accurate the more you use it. The red dot never sways on SMGs (well, not on the MP5 anyway), you only get more experienced with the gun and it's antics and learn how to control ot better yourself.
I'm still puzzled myself between using the silencer or red dot. The silencer looks and sounds so badass and it's very useful in S&D. But the Red Dot does actually make the gun more accurate than the iron sights, which is useful if you're fighting over long distance, cause with the iron sights it's a pain in the *** to hit anything med range.Comment

I'll chime in also in support of Stopping Power and Steady Aim for a good perk combo.
You also have to keep in mind your play style, game types, and maps you're playing. I started out a run&gun assault rifle guy. So training my self to use the G3 and M14 has been a pain, but if you use a weapon long enough, you adjust your play style to it's strengths.Comment

Actually I'm surpised no one recommended extreme conditioning, it actually IS one of the more interesting ones for SMGs. I'm using it now with a P90 with silencer or reflex sight, stopping power and bomb squad. I've had rounds where I've just kept running and shooting, sometimes stopping to recover from damage, or going crouched into corners, to stop, lean and then back into sprint while shooting at any point along the way. with all this running, and the silencer especially you can sneak around the bigger maps and flank like 5 people at once, move on, and flank another few people, or just hit a few people, and literally lead them on a chase that brings them in range of other friendlies. SMGs have their prupose, they just might not be everyones style. And I give props to people that can snipe me while I'm in full sprint, I find sniping people at full tilt sprint pretty hard in this game, Most other games the person is moving slow enough that it's easy to lead shots, here, if they vary their movement, it's not a simple lead and shoot game, guessing comes into play, and the more skilled snipers seperate from the laser pointers.
before this, steady aim was on all SMGs classes for me. Used the Mp5 and ak47U with bomb squad/stopping power/steady aim for most of my play times, and I'm even using the Mp5 again sometimes . and this also applies to pistols, since you rushing so much, your more often likely to run out of ammo, and since pistol combat usually involves franticly moving and shoot, for a kill or cover, steady aims helps in those situations SMGs tend to get you into.
ARs, LMGs, and sniper rifles suffer, ARs can be decent WITH steady aim, the G36 especially, M4 as well, M16 if your used to 3 round bursts for CQC (IT DOES WORK, as well as automic almost, since it deviates a little less if done right). however since they can shoot effectivley thorough walls, I think deep impact makes more sense, but thus your not as effective at shooting and moving, and close quarters combat in general.
Thats the thing I like about COD4, it's got this great range of options for play style, from ultra short distance never stopping combat, SMGs, ARs, that can be great at all ranges, but not the masters. Good sniping, that just got better with this patch.
though bigger maps would make long range combat shine more, while offering close quarters and med ranged focused loadouts, the challenge of large open areas, with the flanking opportunities of a BF2 sized map would give, with either taking the long way around or slowly crawling through large fields of grass, Mods and or expansions should fix this I hope.Comment

Meh if your accurate you can just use stopping power and deep impact and rape people with a silencer....but im ok with MP5 so i can do that but if you not...then i dont know lolComment

I've had a new love the last couple nights.
Skorpion w/ Red Dot
Bandoleer
Sleight of Hand
Extreme Conditioning
The Skorpion is very accurate and with the Red Dot, it's a head shot machine. Clips reload so fast with Sleight of Hand that if you blink, you missed it.
And flank,flank, flank...Comment

Before I got the P90, the Skorpion was my SMG of choice. You have to tweak your perks to accomodate the small mag capacity and slowish reload, but it's a great weapon.Comment
