  • High ping problems.

Hi, I am having high ping problems in battlefield 2. I know it's not my computer, seeing as i have a quad core, 8800gt, and 2 gb ram. I am on dsl extreme, and my speedtest is this:

on a nearby server, i get usually 60-100 ping, and on an east coast/ europe servers i get 100-250

how can i reduce ping, upgrading my internet MIGHT be a possibiblity, but I would really like a tweak in my system to lower the size of the ping packet.

Port forwarding MAY help. There is no way to reduce the size of the packets sent as far as I know. Supposedly this was possible it Quake 3. There may be a way to lower the size of the packets. The sure fire way to lower ping is to either host a server in your basement (0 ping) or pony up to a faster internet connection.

Port forward opens specific ports BF2 already uses. It not only opens the used port(s) but also directs it to the specific internal IP address (the computer you play on). So instead of the packets being reflected around in the router, it will take less time (<10ms) to reach your computer.

It might drop your overall ping around 5-10ms.

Go here for help on setting up your router. Just pick your router, and game. It will guide you through the setup.

If you are paying for faster than normal DSL speed (xtreme?) then you got ripped off. Those are basic DSL speeds, at least on the east coast. Definitely port forward, also check firewall settings.

EDIT: Your latency is pretty high to that server on speedtest. Try running it again. Remember, actual speed and ping/latency are VERY different things.

That's my speed. I normally average the download speed as a little higher. I like to check my speeds monthly to make sure my phone company isn't screwing me over.

Also, generally I average around a 35-40ms. Max is around 65ms. I'm paying for 3meg down so this test was a little low. My ping to the server seems a little higher than normal.

                EDIT:

I ran another test maybe 5 mins. later. Lower ping and higher download speed. You should test again to see if it helps.

Update PB and lower the amount of harddrive checks that may help out a little.

                    5 minutes later:

i would do the port forwarding, but i don't know my username/password. admin and admin doesn't work, either

to the guy that commented on the xtreme, thats the name of the provider, dsl extreme. we switched to them after verizon had crappy customer service and was down for like a month strait haha

also turn off all other network-centric applications (bit-torrent, streaming media, web browsers)

no, thats not funny. i'm not stupid. i turn off all the network processes... not aim, though

it doesn't do much to higher my ping though, does it?

i didn't see any difference when i turned it off.

and i found a server i'm happy with, 35 ping so im fine....

do colleges have good internet wired in their rooms?

college internet connections are iffy at best.

it really depends on what kind of traffic other people on the line are pulling down. if a few people have bittorrent set up, you'll have a hard time keeping a stable ping. This is also the case at home. Is there any other computers in your house?

                              where are you located geographically?
