[URGENT]PSU Problem

Hi guys, i just bought my new pc, its a bad *** pc for £525, i plug it in all fine, and later in the day i find out it has a red switch on the PSU, so i switch it, while the pc is turned on, and Boom i blew the PSU, so i bought another one. (the old psu had no wires, and just plugs)

The new one is 650W, very nice ect, i plug it all in after finding a male to x2 female plug for my IDE HDD and Side fan, i plug it in, try the power and Nothing. i switched it and tryed it again (this one has the red switch too) and im guessing its DOA, so i take it downstairs to my mum (she's a pc nerd lol) and she agree's with me its DOA, she got it off of Ebay.

Now im running back on my old psu from my crappy pc, its 400W with no red switch and its ancient, it has enough power for the mobo, sata hdd, Gfx card and the cd tray.

The old psu that came with the new pc has no wires coming from it, just plugs(i have the wires for it still here and i'd hate for them to go to waste as no other psu in the house can use them...). and i cant find the same kinda psu anywere on ebay or the net, i need a psu with no gay red switch, and with no wires, with plugs and thats 650W, all for under £40. if any of you can help me i'd very much appreciate it.

I think the red switch you refer to is the fuse voltage changer. That shouldn't be changed unless using different powered mains sockets.

hey alex, yeh man my mum scolded me saying what it was lol, i need to be on the high setting of it, like 300V or something.... but i need to find a new 650W psu with no red switch and the plugs...

You won't. Most PSU's have them on to enable usage in different countries. Just don't change it...

Look, you are doing mission impossible here. You had a modular power supply with a voltage switch. You switched the voltage selector (WHY?) thus frying the PSU (lucky you did not fry the whole computer!). The cables come with the PSU. You most likely won't be able to use them unless you bought the same exact power supply, but that one would already come with those very cables.

So, throw the cables away and get a new PSU. Get a "modular" one, if you want it to have "plugs" in the back - but it will come with the cables. And don't just look at the wattage. A quality 450W PSU w/PFC will outperform many crappy 500-600W ones.

Do NOT attempt to use your wires with any other brand PSU. They may fit, but it is not guaranteed the polarity will match up. Always use the wires that came with the PSU!

PSU's without power switches that can run on any voltage are actually better. You would not be tempted to trip that switch, and they would have active PFC - for you that means better efficiency and money off your mom's electric bill.
