1. Ghost Town
Dice got a lot better at map design with SF. The key to Ghost Town's brilliance is that the city itself is roughly circular in shape. There is a flag in the center and five around it, so the battles take place in many different areas: on the spokes of the wheel between convoy and the other flags, and along the rim between the other flags. This works much better that certain, more linear maps where all of the fighting takes place in a narrow area *cough*karkandhotel*cough* between two flags.
2. Warlord
More linear than ghost town but still more open and spread out than Karkand. The SAS parachute spawn helps get them in the city better, and the map wide enough that the city can't be easily defend from flanking attacks. Plus the palace battles are amazing.
3. Mashtuur
Lots of space around the city allow for circular fighting like in ghost town. Transport choppers can be put to very good use here because of the absence of attach choppers, jets, or AA. Assaulting the gas stations on the north and south sides is always fun.
4. Jalalabad
Something about the way the city is designed makes it really fun whether you're patrolling in a tank or ground pounding through the alleyways. Again, it's much easier for the USMC to get into the city than in certain other maps.
5. Sharqi
I've never really enjoyed sharqi that much, I think the attack choppers kind of ruin it. The openness of the city makes it hard to survive as infantry. It's still a pretty good map with a circular city shape.
And you've probably figured out where I'm going with this...
6. Karkand
Vehicles or IO, there's no bigger mosh pit in BF2 than the streets of Karkand. There is exactly one for the USMC to assault the city: head on. In IO the thousands of grenades thrown every round make it impossible to survive more than thirty seconds, and in vehicles mode, the artillery is devastating because the map is so narrow. Even when the US breaks through, the city is so full of choke points *cough* bridge *cough* that every battle becomes a nadefest of the worst kind. The only reason people play Karkand is so they can get hundreds of points reviving their teammates that are getting blown up by the truckload.
