Alright...so no beating around the bush.
I've downloaded the patch from Hypernia, FileFront, FilePlanet, FileShack, i3D, and the EA Largedownloads page. I've downloaded them more than once from each site at different times (when the "corrupt" versions were cleaned). I've uninstalled and reinstalled my game more than ten times, including deep dives into the registries to delete any possible trace.
And yet every single time I install the patch, it always gives me the "Update failed" error. The last thing it tries to patch is BF2Launcher.exe at 15% overall completion, and then it just stops at mentioned error.
I've tried patching it straight to 1.40, I've tried moving from patch to patch, I've tried Northern Strike and no Northern Strike...I'm running out of options. Can anyone here help me out of this?
