Memory loss?

Hello there :)

I'm having a weird problem,
when I play bf2 it starts to slow down after a while, to the point that it's near impossible to play. When I check Task Manager I start with 200MB of memory usage, when I start tot play on a map it jumps over 2GB. After I shut down bf2, memory usage will stay on approximately 1GB until I restart my computer, there also is no sign of any program in the list that uses that amount of memory.

I don't think the slowing down has anything to do with my processor or graphics card, as the first minutes of gameplay are smooth and without problems. I run bf2 with the dvd, I also tried using a mini image without result. (I read somewhere that there is a protection against using pirated software, it's not really my case but I tried anyway)

I hope you have an answer I've been searching for a while now, and sorry if this issue has already been explained somewhere, I couldn't find anything about it in the stickies nor with the search function.

weird... mabye its a setting somewhere in your computer that says don't delete excessive stuff. idk

what do you mean by slowing down??

like skipping or lagg??

have you tried the old faithful's , scan for virus/malware, do a cleanup with CCleaner or something, then registry scan & fix, then defrag.

the memory bar in the task manger 2 GB is proably normal when game is running, actually thats your PF usuage and is this xp or vista? if vista you may need more ram, but i'd get another gig if its xp, will make it run better.
oh & delte bf2 cache's

I ran a scan for virusses and malware (AVG and Adaware), my hard drive is defragged, I cleaned and defragged the registry, I have 10GB left on my hard disk and I'm running XP. What should I check my page file settings for?
And I have trouble finding BF2's cache it's not in the location described by the sticky.

Should I really buy another GB of RAM? I thought that 2GB was sufficient for BF2 on XP.

2 gig of ram is good, 3 is just better, you only have 10gig left on HD might be your prob.
cache , go to start/my documents/bf2/mods/bf2/cache
the logo cache can be dumped also, its before the mods folder

normally you go about 1.5x amount of ram for your page file.
go to start/control/system/advanced/performance/performance settings/advanced/at bottom "virtual memory" see what it says (how many MB's), if you want you can hit the change button & select "system managed size" and it will adjust it for you.

when it gets real laggy does the HD run? liek the light flicker or hear the grinding noise??

I did everything you said, it helped a bit but it still slows down.

Now it gets better for a while until it slows down again. So the first ~20 seconds in a graphic heavy place are smooth as they should be, then it starts slowing down and lagging.
If these details can help you; the sound stays normal, the lagging gets worse if I make violent moves with my mouse and when it freezes it becomes almost playable again after a while. I'm not sure but I think less intensive maps also slow down when I load them after an intensive one, they normally run fine.

BF2 is the only game that behaves like that, I would say that my specs aren't goog enough but that doesn't explain the first half minute of smooth gameplay. I also notice nothing special about the HD when the lagging starts.

You haven't turn the page file or virtual memory function off by any chance have you?

ok, IMO id get more drive space & either make it the primary/slave or id put most page file on it, it maynot even be defragging good with it allmost full.

the lagg like that can either be a lack of ram, which i dont think 2 gig should run it good, or graphic card just not in good shape, do you run it on low settings? medium? if medium or high try it on low & see if it helps.
and or the HD tryn to find the files in on that HD , see what it doesnt put in ram it puts on that drive, more ram the better since ram is fast.

what settings do you use i should of asked before.

All settings are high, yes it helps when I set them to medium, but it seems that there is something that keeps putting pressure on the RAM when playing and finally exhausts it. It's like some unnessecary files are loaded in the memory each different map and stay there until I restart my computer. When I load one of the less intensive maps gameplay will be smooth, as long as it's the same one. When I run another small map afterwards that normally doesn't have any problems it will start to lag too.

I also freed up some space on my HD (20GB free space now) and defragged it again to no avail. Windows defragger might not be the best program but BF2 was not in the list of fragmented files.

Maybe it is just a lack of RAM, I used to run all settings on high but that was before the latest patches. It just doesn't explain why the other maps slow down when they run fine the first time

it is odd, with it helping to put them on medium helped, then it could be the gpu , maybe just not fast enough, or maybe heating a little, have you checked the temps on it while bf2 is running?? rivatuner is good for that.

have you checked your background process' to make sure nothing running that shouldnt be? what kinda anti virus do you have?

they say renaming the bf2.exe will help but xfire wont pick up the game if its renamed is only dis advatage. you can try it, you just have to delete your shortcuts & navigate into the bf2 folder & rename to somethign liek bf21.exe or what ever & if it dont help just rename it back to bf2.
i donno why, but some swear by that.

here's someting also to help identify your background process' to make sure no flags come up, good little program from microsft. just unzip on your desktop you dnont have to install jsut open it.

Rivatuner doesn't work, it freezes when I click the costumize button. I don't think the GPU overheats though.

Something that I did messed up the game, now when a map is loaded I get a glimpse of the map and then BF2 crashes to windows without an error message. I'll reinstall it and see if it helps.

The manual uninstall did wonders, all the lag problems are gone now. Everything is smooth as it should be on the highest settings

But it looks like I've traded one problem for another, half of the maps I try to play crash just after they're loaded I'll have a look on the forums now and see if I can a solution.
