So I am not alone, a few of my clan mates have had the same issues downloading the BETA patch by accident and not the final patch. Had to completely uninstall and reinstall. So, the file name you want is

BF2142_Update_1.40_FP.exe

Note the "FP".

umm, well, i have vista and i can't open regular exe files some reason and actually get them to run and patch up BF2142, but the unzip files do work like the self unzip files and if i get it through EA downloader (by the way how you do that) or through gameshadow
