You aren't goin to like this response, but here goes...

Happened to me also. I installed Tuesday morning after running to Best Buy to get my reserve copy, set up the game according to my preferences, with 1680x1050 being my native resolution. Played the rest of the day, no probs.

Woke up the next morning and fired it up, only to have the DX9 error popup hit me.

    Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over?!?!

It worked fine just 8 hours earlier!?

I tried to update DX9 with the Nov 2007 update directly from MS, no joy.

I then tried to actually UNINSTALL using XP Control Panel (I tried 4 times), so I could reinstall...NO JOY. The thing would NOT uninstall:dead::shakehead:shock::cry:!!

    So I kludged it.

I used the uninstall feature on CCleaner, which left a ton of stuff behind, which I actually physically clicked and dragged to the Recycle Bin. I then ran two different registry cleaners about 4 times apiece to clean up the registry as much as I could. I pop the CoD4 Install disc back in the drive, and it autoplayed, but only the Uninstall option presented itself, so I had to close that out, right click the drive icon and selct "open", the double click the installer and off she went, reinstalling.

I am more than just a bit apprehensive about going home tonight to start playing. That's twice I've reached Master Sergeant/E-8 now, so if it happens again, that's a huge demotion back to Buck Private ROFL!

Backup your configs/profiles/saves before you uninstall, then copy/paste them back in later. You'll probably keep your progress that way.

Do you have xfire? I was having the same problem. I exited out of xfire and went to the game direct. I change my resolution and graphics settings and everything was fine. After I had played a little while, I went through xfire to play again. It kept my graphics settings and I had no problems. So, I think it's an xfire issue. Try that out and see if it works.

That xfire has been trippin for me too... If i have xfire runnin and start bf2, the game instantly crashes. Close xfire, and try again and it works like a charm...
