You're wrong here. 939-dualcore are pretty rare and overpriced normally, since they are not manufactured anymore.
Most 939-dual cores are clocked lower than their single core counterpart thus, delivering worse performance in BF2. (which does not support dual core)
But hey, why not bash people without knowing anything about 939 and multiprocessing.

Well gents, I found this awesome article - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...u-games_3.html - with a chart showing the FPS of BF2 using a wide variety of CPU,s both single and dual core. Take a look and see what you think.

To me, it's almost a no-brainer. I want to boost BF2 and I don't care about anything else. So the single core is the way to go, it appears. I can get the 4000+ at Newegg for $60.

      What do you guys think?

No you would be better off with one of these,

and overclocking it to 2.4GHZ (the same speed as the 4000+). And on the motherboard you have that won't be too difficult at all, and the x2 3800+ should do that without even breaking a sweat. Also makes it so you are ready for any of these games,

and any others that are coming out that will be multi-threaded.

One more thing, if you are going to spend money on a 939 system, it is a total waste to go from a 3500+ (2.2GHZ) to a 4000+ (2.4GHZ). The extra L2 on the 4000+ won't make enough of a difference either.

Well, if you just are going to play BF2 on your system and don't want any overclocking at all, that's the way to go, a single core with 1MB cache and pretty high frequency.

Still, most cpu:s can overclock past the performance of the 4000+, even with the stock cooler. If you are into overclocking I would try to get hold of a dualcore, if the price is right.

Don't forget about the opteron cpu:s, you can find them in both single core and dual core, sometimes for a great price.

This has been an interesting thread ....with my system I get 90 fps but I do get stuttering issues...this is with a ping that is under 70...are the 7900's bottle-necking my system?

I don't think its 7900's are the problem at all. I have (2) 7900GTX's 512mb each running in SLI with a Pentium D dual core processor, and everything runs great. Do you have the 7900GT's or GTX's?

              --edit--

I just saw your specs in your sig, those cards seem just fine, the stuttering must be from something else.

dunno if anyones mentioned it but u can overclock your cpu, ive got a 4000+ (2.4)at 3.2ghz. bf2 flies along, try it before buying a new cpu, if it improves it enough well then u saved money. expect 2.5-3ghz out of it.

whats the command for disabling bf2's frame rate cap, mine always stays flickering between 99-101 and id like to set it to 125 if possible :yay:

I find it hard to believe what I am reading people are saying on this thread.

OK, Dual-cores will help marginally with a BF2. You will need to get the AMD patch though to hope update system to run it more smooth. I'll find the links if you want. I run a 939 Opty and I get great frames with my 7900GT SLI. Now, I do not push it at the res you are.

Here is the thing I need really want to get at. The latest cards will not realize the level of performance possible without one of the latest processors on the market. If you want to get the most performance out of the card you really need to get a topshelf proc to go along with it.

So, I also need to say that BF2 has no opitmizations for dual-core. It is not really going to matter much. My friend has two boxes with AMDs. Both sport the same DFI motherboard. One has a single core and the other a dual. Same video cards and the single runs better then the dual. Go figure!?

So, I would say don't get caught up in the spin around cores if it is related to BF2. If it is for another game, great!, but if it is for BF2, think about how fast your memory runs, or maybe a video card.

Hey, from what I am seeing, Intel is kicking some *** right now, and if you couple that with a 8800GT, you have a monster box. The price point on that box is really good too. Unfortunatly, because you and I both are running 939's our memory will not follow us to another motherboard/CPU. You are going to have to think bigger if you want to go dual, unless you find a great deal on a dual-core939 (which there are plenty right now!).

So, to answer you question quickly. No, don't go dual-core if you are looking for a poor-mans upgrade right now. Got for great OCZ memory and OC the hell out of it. Or go SLI if you want to spend a little more on a card from eBay.

BF2 isn't optimized for multiple cores, but I suspect the newer chips will have an edge in performance anyway.

Games like Crysis and Alan Wake will fully utilize all cores, so you might want to spend the money to get a good processor. Hell, just get a Q6600 and overclock it...

Given your resolution, you will see little to no benefit from upgrading the CPU. Simple as that. 1024x768 is a cpu-limited resolution for most people with high-end cards, and that's where they tested it, if they tested it at 2560x1600, the differences would be 1 or 2 fps at most.

Also, look at their framerates. NOBODY gets 500fps without disabling every single GPU-accelerated feature, or as many as possible. Meaning, lowest settings, view distance, and resolution. What they did was a synthetic test on the lowest of settings and it ONLY tells us the difference in CPU speeds, not the real-world impact a new cpu will make.

mine is a 4000+ single core, 2.4ghz 1mb cache. yours is a dual core 2.1ghz.

yeh if his gfx not fast enough then the cpu cant help, but its only at 2.2ghz he said so there is room for it to help fps if he can get closer to 3ghz or something.

You do not need a dual-core CPU to play this game. Actually, right now there isn't a single game in the marketplace that has been written to make use of dual-core CPU's. The dual-core CPU will only benefit you if you want to multi-task as you're playing the game, so that your operating system can be doing something else as you play the game.

Neverthless, if you want to buy a dual-core, get this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103002 , you can easily O/C to 2.8 or 3.0 gigz. If you want single-core try to find an FX chip, either the 55 or 57, they're great. I've got the 55 on my system, and I have the same mobo that you have, and my system runs smooth, although I don't play with a resolution as high as you do.
