Upgrading my ram

I currently have 2 x 512mb running and i'm looking to get another 2 x 1gb of ram. I have 4 slots available in total. Should I just add the 2gb to make 3gb , or remove the 1gb and only run the new 2gb? Someone told me that it may run with a slower performance if i keep my old ram in, is that true?

Also, will I notice a difference in game with the upgrade in ram?

The slowest RAM will set the speed. So it depends on how big the difference is.
You could try both and run a benchmark.

Going from 1GB to 2GB should improve your BF2142 experience, it is very memory hungry.
