It would be cheaper, but you should make sure you really know what you are doing before ordering the parts. There are a lot of good FAQ's and guides on www.overclock.net available which should help.
If you had it factory built, you would be assured that it would work first time off, but obviously you pay a premium on the parts and for manufacture.
I made this pc and i found it fairly easy to do but it is hard to find the right bits it was cheaper in the long run. So i think it is worth it

i would love to have built my pc i have now, would have been fun and a good experience...but i had to much to do, so i say go for it
It's fun right up until
a). You hit the power switch for the first time and nothing happens... yup that happened to me and it turned out to be the naff cheap PSU supplied with the case.
or
b). Something goes wrong after x amount of months and you need to try and solve what it is... yup that too happened to me during a BF2 my hard disc decided to die and the PC just wouldn't boot.
IMO if you can build your own PC then you will be able to troubleshoot problems easier in the long term.
Buying the componants is usualy cheaper than buying in stores, i honestly recommend it, but make sure the componants all fit properly! Best idea is to choose a good motherboard and then buy the componants that fit into that.
