  • Sound Error...

The last time i played BF2 was about 9PM last night, it was working perfectly. My sound options were as follows:

    Renderer: Hardware
    Quality: High
    EAX: Disabled

I shut down my computer and went to bed at about 12am, woke up early, went out with some friends, came home at about 2:00PM (40 minutes ago).

I started up BF2, and this is what i got (video):

If that video fails to load (since putfile can be slow sometimes), here is a direct video download. It's 10MB in total:

I didn't touch my computer since i turned it off, nor did anyone. Here's how it went:

12AM: Shut down computer, go to bed
2PM (next day): Turn on computer
    2:05PM: Double click BF2

And that's when the issue occured.

    What do i do?

      Re: Sound Error...

      AMD 3800+
      2GB DDR400 RAM
      6800GT
Sound Blaster Vibra 128 Sound Card (old i know)

But i mean, it was working last night, and today it doesn't work. All my other games, such as Counter-Strike Source, Medal of Honour: Airborne, Rainbow Six Vegas, work and sound perfectly fine...

        Corrupted sound files perhaps?

        you can reinstall bf2

        update sound drivers.

          1) There hasn't been an 'update' for my sound card since 2001
          2) You positive a re-install will fix it?
          3) What prevents this issue from happening a few days after i re-install?

Nothing prevents it, but its your only option in this situation. Maybe your sound card died?

Counter-Strike Source, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Spider-Man 3, Halo 1, Halo 2, Warcraft III, Stranglehold, Fifa 07, Fifa 08 Demo, Quake Wars Demo, Call of Duty 2: Multiplayer, Team Fortress 2, Company of Heroes, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Hitman Bloodmoney, and a ton of other games.

              All of which sound perfect...

It doesn't really matter anymore anyway. It's become apparent to me that no one has ever managed to fix this problem, short of using software mode.

That would be because a card that old doesn't have the hardware to run in hardware mode for today's games.

                  Re: Sound Error...

Bacender, I experienced the exact same issue you had! At about the same time (9:15). I had the issue once before and I logged out of BF2 and re-logged back in and it fixed it the first time. But last night it didn't work when I re-looged back in. I will be playing tonight and if it isn't fixed I guess I have no choice to do a re-install of BF2.

Pleas let me know if you find a solution.

Did you even bother to read my first post, or did you just skim through the title?

Yes I did. I also read this,

Sound Blaster Vibra 128 Sound Card (old i know)
That card and the drivers for it (not to mention zero support for OpenAL) are both so old that there is no way in hell that it was running in hardware mode. Hell the card doesn't even support EAX,

Stormy, you're completely lost, my friend.

I just managed to fix my issue by re-installing the Windows Drivers. I can run in Hardware mode with High quality sound selected.

You may have it set to hardware mode, but it isn't using any hardware. Kind of hard for that to happen when the card doesn't even have the required hardware on it (EMU10K1/2). Or was Dice imagining things when they wrote this in the ReadMe,

The following sound cards do not support the Hardware Audio
                          Renderer option:

                          Altec Lansing ADA70 USB Speakers

                          ASound Express II
                          Aureal Vortex
                          Aureal Vortex 2
                          Aztech A3D

Creative Labs SB Live X-GAMER 5.1

Heck show me anywhere in the specs for that card,

where is says anything about hardware.

Issue ID'd. I have the SB Live 24bit card in my system and it gives me the studder voice when playing BF2 through the speakers.

I plugged in my USB headset and no more issue.

Since I mainly play with a headset I never realized that it was an issue to w/o it.

                            Check it out.

When using the card same as above, software only; same applies to the usb headset. And the reason you didn't notice it when using the headset is that usb headsets don't use the sound card, they use their own drivers, etc.
