I just ordered an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 800 ram and an EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 motherboard and I was wondering how well BF2 runs on it overlocked. Does anyone know? I already know BF2 has issues with some overclocked setups. Just wondering, because im planning on overlocking the cpu to the speed of the Q6700 or slightly faster.
How well does bf2 run on an oc'ed q6600?

Re: How well does bf2 run on an oc'ed q6600?
I have the same mobo, A1 too...
My E6600 worked fine @ 3.4 ghz but last month for a whole week my system just kept crashing. I think it was a ram issue but ever since then I've gone back to stock clock.
Anyways, a Q6600 is over kill. What a waste of money. The only game that may benefit from it is Supreme commander me thinks.
With that said, all your games are single thread applications (with acception of SC listed above) and thus only take advantage of one core. Quad is not needed to run bf2 nor will it make any real performance increase compared to a duel core.
So umm, you don't need to OC it either.
But if you do, make sure to use thermal paste and a good aftermarket fan.
Also, read the box and check what stepping you have. If you have a B3 stepping return it ASAP. Its the garbage Q6600's that don't Oc well. You want G0 stepping, which will basically cut the temps down thus giving more OC'ing potential.
Have fun.

Don't be so ****ing stupid, you know how well a 2 and a half year old game will run on a Quad core machine, put your e-penis back in your pants for **** sake.

Theres nothing special about a Q6600 anyways... I look at people who have them and laugh. What a piece of shlt, especially the early buyers.Originally posted by DrunkenPirate View PostDon't be so ****ing stupid, you know how well a 2 and a half year old game will run on a Quad core machine, put your e-penis back in your pants for **** sake.

If you want true quad power you gotta wait for a real quad core to come out or at least for a penryn... Q6600 is a joke!
So my point is that if he is trying to show off his e-penis, its small as it is. I'd continue on the burn wreckage but me no sure if he was really trying to sound like he is all that or maybe it was just sarcasm... Who knows.

Re: How well does bf2 run on an oc'ed q6600?
I paid $280 for it at newegg with free shipping, the Q6700 was like $250-300 more for only 260mhz per core. At Newegg it's $200 for a dual core vs $80 more for a quad core. Who wouldnt spend the extra money for something that will last more than a year? Hell, I spent $390 for my AMD Athlon X2 and it was already old at the time. I most likely wont be doing anymore upgrading until the Geforce 9800 series is released and after that it will be about a year and a half before I even start considering new parts.
I'm only asking, because I want to try to avoid any problems or issues if someone else already knowns of any. Also, I was planning on running a dedicated server for some other games, but I want to play on it from just this computer.

Think long-term, fellas: Crysis, Alan Wake and many other games/applications will take full advantage of four cores in the near future. Whether or not it's worth waiting for different steppings is debatable, so buy whatever you want because sooner or later, it'll serve its purpose...
I was going to build a new system based on a Quad core and 8800 Ultra, but with finances being tight, I'll just upgrade from a single-core 3800+ to a 4200+ X2 and another 8800GTS for SLI: that should take me well into 2008, if not 2009...

Very well as long as your GPU is fine too (8800gts I assume)

Well regardless of why you bought it, just make sure you get your G0 stepping because the fact is that it is there. Why should you accept something that will perform lesser for your money when they cost the same price? And you plan to OC, G0 is for you.

8800 ULTRA?
SLI'd 8800 GTS?
Budget?
Intel's quad core cpu's are not even a true quad core. They are a hasty design of two conroes thrown onto one die. It earned them the title first to reach quad but many debate its not a real quad core simply because of what I've stated above. I've heard some say there is a bottleneck on the die because of this but I only seen it floating around twice in the tech threads.
You need an 8800 ULTRA? Only use for an ULTRA is at extremely large resolutions... I bought a GTX and even it is too powerful for the resolution I play at. I guess if your thinking long term thats ok but then again why waste that money on a DX10 card when DX10.1 is already on the horizon for the next 9xxx series. Overall, an 8800 is only for a true FPS freak who likes really high numbers and if you fit that describtion, no wonder your fianances are tight.
SLI technology is a waste of money. You only receive 40% increase in performance. Not to mention, every card generation surpasses the previous card 1 > 2 in SLI which then destroys the idea of SLI being a good budget option. If anything, you buy your GTS and sit tight with it until a 9800 GTS comes out. Then you get the best of both worlds, full DX10.1 readyness and a powerful card.
It's cool to have the gear but when you talk about budget and what your buying/bought, the two do not go together. If anything, you sound like you have money to spend. Don't forget that massive PSU that you need too to power those bad boys in SLI and the cooling...
By the way, what game is it you are playing that requires SLI'd 8800 GTS? And are those the 320 or 640 versions? Either way, good for you.

I don't know about playing BF2, but it may do the job of compensating for your short d!ck. On the second thought it probably won't even do that. Use the Q6600 as a pickup line, and you'll get laughed at. All you can do with it is stay home, look at it and be happy with it. Or better cry for being stupid.

It's not necessarily the game(s), but rather the video settings and future applications. Even if the card's potential is wasted at the present time, it'll still come into play in the near future.Originally posted by SystemBudget?
An 8800GTS is 400$. Hardly worth writing home about...

The benchmarks are pleasing enough. The rest is technicalities that I will let the geeks argue over. I know hardware and software, but I don't take it to an extreme, either...

Even the lower widescreen resolutions will be taxing for upcoming games if you intend on playing them with what I would consider aesthetically pleasing settings. An 8800 is not overkill by any definition.

SLI can be a waste of money, but it depends on your situation. Had I moved forward with building a new computer, I wouldn't have considered SLI, but it's a lot cheaper for me to purchase another 8800 than to get the Ultra. Again, upcoming games, widescreen resolutions and proper video settings for an enjoyable experience.

The two go together depending on what you consider a budget. I have no problem dropping 2200$ on a new system, but it wouldn't be financially responsible at the moment: however, 700$ in upgrades that will last me 1.5 years is fine. When I built my present computer, I planned ahead: my 700W PSU can handle SLI quite comfortably. PC is well ventilated and room inside the tower is adequate.
By the way, what game is it you are playing that requires SLI'd 8800 GTS? And are those the 320 or 640 versions? Either way, good for you.

So why wasting money now, instead of buying it in near future when it'll be half a price? Just so you can feel important?
