Hypothetical question

Says I were to purchase BF2: Special Forces this afternoon. would I need to re-install BF2, install Special forces, and patch to 1.41? Or would the SF expansion be ready to play online with version 1.41 already installed?

You could just install SF and run the patch and it should work.

You would have to install the patch 1.41 again after you install SF.

Now would the patch actually install over itself and only update the SF files? or would it just detect that the game thus far is already up to 1.41 and thus forcing me to re-install?

Installing SF would revert your bf2 version to 1.0/1.0 hence you need to repatch
