I read Scinto's sticky about ranks and used the link (thank you)

but from there i got confused about the rank stuff like for example:

to get Master Gunnery Sergeant it says you need Master Sergeant (what if you have First Sergeant) - does this still count?

Sure ...First Sergeant means your a Master Sergeant, but with all your basic badges ...now all you need is the 50,000 points to get to Master Gunnery Sergeant.
