Learning to Fly

but I ain't got wings....


I've been playing for 6 months or so and have never flown in this game. I have a joystick and have began practicing on empty servers.

The jets move in a predictable way when using the joystick. Choppers are another story, entirely. I kind of fly up and backwards (unintentionally) and flying directionally is a mess for me.

Are the controls just really non-intuitive or am I just retarded?

You just have to get used to the feel of the chopper and realize the physics of how it moves. it flies vertically when it is completely level. If you nose forward just a touch, you'll flie foward, and nose back backward etc...

For going up and down (height) don't tilt the nose really, instead use the throttle. More power will make you go higher and less of course you'll drop.

What i've found about choppers is that a little movement goes a long way. Also if you feel like you've lost control, cut the power for a sec. It will help you to level out

Use mouse and keyboard for the helicopters.

^^ agreed. i juts use keyboard when flying helicopters. its alot easier than joystick

I don't use Joystick and never have, but i have yet to meet someone who can own in a chopper with a Joystick, and keep it steady at the same time while pulling maneuvers. I'm sure with practice it can be done very well, but it seems KB/mouse is a whole lot easier.

I've been trying to use my joystick for a couple months but I still suck, using the mouse and keyboard for both is best imo.

It's really not that hard. It just takes some practice.

Keyboard is best (for me), but using any type of control takes time. When I started I kept flying into the sides of mountains at full speed, or the chopper tried to fly itself upside down.

I have always used a joystick for choppers, not hard at all, just practice off line, learn to circle strafe.

Never had a problem keeping a chopper level with a joystick, but I have seen some really good keyb mouse chopper pilots. Either way is easy.

you obviously don't have your joystick configured right if you always go up and over... like I said practice off line, you can change adjust control settings while in a local game, just hit escape, change hit apply, and escape back into the game and try it out.

Oh and did I mention please practice off line, nothing worse than a nub wasting the best asset on most maps.
