BF2 Graphic Settings

I was fiddling around with some settings and came to the conclusion that AA and texture filtering in the BF2 settings are pretty useless. (to me, atleast)

my system specs:
athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1ghz dual-core
1GB ram
Geforce 8600GT
Windows vista home premium

Putting texture filtering on high in BF2's graphic settings makes my FPS drop (making it unplayable), and medium makes it look like it's almost not on at all, which makes it look really bad. When I go to my nvidia control panel and set AF to 16x, I get the same effect as BF2's texture filtering setting on high, BUT WITH NO FPS DROP.

The same thing applies to AA. When I put AA on 8x using BF2's graphic settings, my FPS dropped a little bit (still playable, though). But when I set AA to 16x using the nvidia control panel, I don't get any FPS drop at all and it looks the same, or a bit better than BF2's 8x.

I recommend anyone who has these options in their nvidia control panel to try it out and see what results you get. (If you haven't already tried it out) In my BF2 graphic settings, my texture filter is on low, and my AA is OFF



btw, what's with all the 5200FXs? I notice a lot of people have them (or had them). Even I have one in my old computer...

I saw a tweak guide online, and it was showing screens between the various settings of texture, lighting, the options you can change to either Low, Medium, or High. And the guide showed through screens that some made no virtual difference when on Med as opposed to High, well except for the drop in frames per second.

Basically you want to set AA to "application controlled" in your control panel and then use whatever settings you want in game. I find the opposite with AF. Set it to whatever you want in control panel for it to work best.

I had E6300 @ 3.5ghz, 2gb ram and also 8600gt and I had a constant 100fps at high settings (except dynamic effects on medium).

I asked about something similiar to this months back when I built my new rig because I was getting really choppy playing using in game AA with the video drivers back then. Turned out it was the drivers fault but there were no worries, just turn AA to 16X through Nvidia and turn off the ingame AA and your fine. Then again, I use a 8800 gtx.

To kiwi. The cpu has nothing to do with your FPS. Infact, the only thing you really have is an extra GB of ram which really helps a lot. Don't try to argue that a CPU does your GPU's job, otherwise we wouldn't need a gpu then would we?

Ps. nice OC... I just put mine back to stock clocks recently because there is absolutely no difference in loading times with everything turned up. BF2 is a gpu intense application, not cpu. A game like supreme commander may show increased performance me thinks though.

Cpu @ stock was very slow and almost unplayable at those settings. Yes, cpu does not do GPU's job but GPUs need certain cpu power too

Take 8800 series and C2D for example. There is a big difference going from stock speed to say 3.8GHz

In fact, ~3.8 is about the right cpu speed to fully utilize 8800 potential (not talking about xtreme oc)

My computer is using up 400mb of RAM, and once I load up BF2 and start playing, it uses up 900mb of 1GB. That's why I sometimes get low (but nothing under 40) FPS.

How do you check your FPS? In Microsoft Flight Simulator X it is Shift+Z but i don't know how to display in BF2. Thanks for any help.

nVidia's drivers had/still have this problem where you can't set certain AA modes without FPS death.

The reason you're seeing no FPS drop is probably heavy CPU bottlenecking.

Type renderer.drawFps 1 into the console (`).

Or run a program called Fraps.

I run View Distance at 100%, Geometries on High, and Effects on Medium. Everything else at low- and my system is 2 gigs of PC6400 RAM, a Q6600, and an 8800 GTS 320 MB.

I just love the maxed out Frames Per Second.

BF2 without AA looks terrible for me.

You have a good card, but the processor and RAM is bottlenecking it, especially for a Battlefield game

set the ingame AA settings to offthen in the nvidia contorl panel set it to 2x AA or something?

I can't believe you are happy with Vista & 1GB ram, that sucker eats at least 500MB of RAM just on its own so how the hell are you managing on playing BF2 on full?
