In real life fighter pilots don't like to use afterburners because the extra heat attracts heat seeking missiles.... same in bf2???

yeah... in a f35 vs j10 situation sometimes I think the f35 missiles are actually attracted to the empty space around a j10 ... there's no logic to missiles in bf2...

I guess it's just a subconscious reflex that I never use afterburners when attempting to evade missiles in BF2; whether it really affects their lock-on in the game, I don't know; doubtful.

In BF2 it works just the opposite. With afterburners you can reposition your plane such that the missiles loose tracking, Su-30, Su-27, F18, by pushing downwards in an inverse loop. With the MiG the after burners coupled by a special roll puts the missiles path into space where it just misses. The after burners with the J10 position the J10 out of lock angle when they approach too close.

In BF2 the after burners allow you make sharper turns. When the missile gets closer you can actually use the after burner to position the jet outside the missiles FOV, as the area it covers shrinks the closer it is to its target.

The only reason it manages to hit the F35 all the time is because even if you blind-fire your missiles the hitbox is notoriously large that it will get hit.

So, conclusion: Afterburners + BF2 = immunity in most cases.
