          5 years, lol.

The game is too crap for that, plus, more awesome battlefield-like games are coming out. Once EA pulls the plug on ranking (it costs money you know), BF2 will lose s*itloads of players.

BF2 always has at least twice the player population as 2142, it has ever since 2142 came out. usually its closer to 25,000 bf2 players and 12,000 2142 players at peek time, right this moment there are 24,800 bf2 players and only 11,015 2142 players.

allot of bf2 players dont want to take a 150 year leap into the future where guns are much less accurate and soldiers are twice as stupid. with mods like forgotten hope 2 still in the works and people still staying hooked on the vanilla rank id say shes only halfway through her life if that. there are plenty of people who still play bf1942 and look how old it is.

I keep hearing about all these games that are coming out that are going to be replacing the BF series and I have yet to see one that actually competes with it directly. ETQW is certainly not going to compete with it. Regardless of ones individual opinion on it, ETQW is a very different game. I hear about COD4 but it looks more like CS (or not surprisingly other COD games), small and more about CQB than the large expansive environments with vehicles found in BF. There's Crysis, but a lot of it's hype is the graphics. I don't remember Far Cry (their previous game) having incredible multiplayer or anything. So why assume Crysis will.

I find it strange that no one seems to be able to get the BF "formula" down very well.

Simply because to make another BF-like modern warefare game will incur the wrath of EA and its lawyers. There is more to making games than you think. Each developer needs to come up with ideas that get around the nicks and nacks of a lawsuite.

UT3 is comming out with Unreal Warefare which promises to be interesting, but of course its no BF2 - its a fast paced game.

If there is anyone to be blamed for a non-revival of BF, its all of EA's customers who support their bad-habbits by buying their games. As long as EA remains a power, there will be no BF game remade by another company.

Back to topic: BF2 will continue as long as players continue to play it. As long as players continue to keep ranked servers popular, EA will continue to earn revenue from the sales of ranked servers, thus will keep the stat system. All players need to do is keep playing.

There are still thousands of UT99 servers out there, 8 years down the line. I installed my old copy of Quake2, with no server browser mind you, and was still able to find 100 or so servers. Point is, games can have a pretty decent lifespan, and with the ranking system / etc, I see bf2 going for a while longer...

That's not how it works. You can't copyright an idea like that. I could go out and make a virtual clone of a BF game and call it "Warfare" and provided I didn't steal actual code or content there's nothing they could do about it. If you could sue for something like that Id has a pretty good case for suing every company on earth for stealing it's deathmatch idea from Doom.

no wonder your car is broken.

                          To the OP

It depends on what you define as being alive. One could define 1942 as it still has a community capable of filling a few servers. Bf2 will be around with over 100 ranked servers untill at least 2010 or when EA pulls the plug on ranked support. but there will still be many unranked servers going around.

agreed, I have been active on these forums since I registered back in jan 2006 and I remember that every time something is hyped up as the end of BF2 it never delivers. PoE2 once had more people viewing its section then BF2 but a day later the number had dropped sharply.

actually it took about 2 or 3 months for BF2 too surpass BF2142 on the Xfire top 10 as BF2142 did very well after its release but as the novelty died off people returned to BF2.
