Does anyone know of any space sims in the works or nearing completion or just good ones in general that were recent(within 4 years)

Dead genre unfortunately. There is occasionally a new space sim that comes out every once in awhile (latest being Darkstar One) but they are not on the scale of the glory days when the space sim was a AAA title.
Off the top of my head a couple good ones are:
Freelancer (Combat and trading free roam) - It is a little simplistic but the single player story and rich, free-roaming universe make it a game that you can play for weeks on end. Multiplayer is also very well done and is almost a pseudo-MMO experience.
Freespace 2 (Pure space combat) - Hands down the greatest combat space sim ever released. I believe it is now available as freeware, along with the source code modifications that modernize the engine and graphics. In the game you're a fighter pilot in a much bigger war. The battles are of an epic scale with even the smallest capital ships dwarfing your fighter.
X3 (Hardcode trading and empire) - X3 is a very difficult to pick up game, but can be extremely rewarding when it picks up speed. You're thrown into an enormous universe with almost nothing. With time you can end up owning your own fleet of carriers, destroyers, and fighter groups. Along with space stations to make money and keep your fleet fueled up. The community is also very active and if you don't like something, chances are there is a mod for it.Comment

x3 ihas beutiful graphics but has more of a cliff than a learning curve..
x2 is also good complex its rewarding if you put into it.Comment
