BF2 Crashing when Joining Server.

This is, from what I understand, a generally common problem.

I start the game.
I choose a server online. I click join game.
I get booted to the desktop.


Running XP, have enough RAM (2gb), etc. etc.

Here's what I've tried.
Renaming Battlefield 2 folder (My Documents and Program Files\EA Games\...) to BF2.
Checking to make sure refresh rate is same in game and general.
Added a .htm to the \pb file, for PunkBuster.
Install and re-install v.1.4.1


I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled the whole thing yet, but before I do that, I wanted to come here and ask... it's my understanding that as far as effects, changing the Battlefield 2 folder's name is just as good as uninstalling.

And also: Single Player runs fine. So I don't know what's making Multiplayer so screwy.


Any ideas?

try clearing your cache folder in My Documents>BF2>Mods>BF2>Cache

And also:

It definitely connects, because it can tell me if a server is full. It only crashes when I could potentially join a server.

somebody wrote not to use the "Play online" icon, i never did anyway, but if u use that it might be prob.

have u done good cleaning of you comp. & scann registry for errors, & then a good ole defrag?? if not i'd try that, cant hurt doing it anyway.

if none of that works i'd uninstall & reinstall, do complete uninstall though that way u know the conflict is gone.

New problem: I tried entering in my CD Key in the .exe in the support folder.

Well, as it turns out, it doesn't accept this CD Key, so now, instead of being dropped from the program, it tells me it's a bad CD Key. But I've found the box, there's not one on the box, so this is the only one there is (back of the manual).
No clues what to do now... I can't uninstall it without the assurance that I'm going to have the CD Key right.

U have a EA account? u bought the game, or was it used? I think if u have the account you can go to EA support tell them your having trouble & tried to re-enter the key & you key on the book says its not right. but mine isn't on the box either , its on the book.

so i'd write EA support first just to make sure, at the lest the might be able to help with the problem. takes about a day sometimes less they will write back.

I reinstalled.
