  • Computer shuts off for no reason

Last night, I was playing Project Reality mod, when all of a sudden my computer just shuts down on me. I thought it was nothing serious, so I went off to restart my computer again.

Turns out I couldn't. I had to unplug everything, and turn it on from the back. The fans started humming for a few seconds, and the system turned itself off again. Even when I do manage to turn my computer on, it'll just randomly turn off all of a sudden whenever I'm in the middle of doing something. I haven't been able to narrow down the problem, but I do know that I can no longer play any games that require online access like Battlefield 2 Multiplayer and Project Reality, because it'll automaticlly shut my computer down again.

Already checked my computer for virus, and opened the case to make sure nothing was overheating. Those two didn't seem to be the problem.

My computer's been running fine for almost two years, so I don't know what the problem could be.

    My Specs are:

    Windows XP SP2
    AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
    ASUS K8V-MX Motherboard
    512 RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 6600 256MB
    Realtek AC'97 Audio
    300 Watt Power Supply

even with an open case, ur comp can still overheat. make sure u remove dust from everything. im guessing that the problem could be overheating. sometimes mycomp just shuts down on me when im gaming for too long prob from overheating and my case is open. plus its summer

It was actually raining yesterday, and it's raining right now. So it's rather cool compared to about a week ago when most of my temperatures were spiking towards the 50c level. Currently most of my temperatures are running below 40c.

Cheap and nasty mate, i would deffo look at getting a better PSU.
It may or may not be the problem but will still be a good investment.
300W is very low these days. Freezing and reboot problems are often linked to a PSU on its way out

                  Nope. Just shuts off.

-- Any recommendations for a replacement for my PSU?

                    Great PSU at good price...
                    Where you from?

Can get far better but i think you just need a 'decent' PSU

Also I advise you disable "restart on Windows failure" in system properties ==> advanced (winXP).

Not that it seems that it will help in this situation, but it's worth a shot.

Seems like my computer is running fine again. I can play online without my computer shutting itself down.

def would have thought power supply...
I had a few cheap cases that came with power supplies, all went bad.

Got myself a nice Coolermaster been great ever since.
BF2 wants LOTS of good clean POWER....
