Getting the most out of BF2 graphics.

If someone were to try to get BF2 to it's highest potention, would they have AA(antialiasing) at the highest it can go? I've been fiddling around with video settings to see what the differences are. I always play with all low settings, 800x600 resolution and AA off. When I put AA to 4x it made things in the back look a bit blurry.

My PC is a pentium 4 2.0ghz, 750mb RAM and a geforce 5200. I can LOOK at the game on all high with the highest resolution, but I obviously can't play. The FPS is less than 3 lol.

I'm getting a new PC soon that should be able to play on all high, so I was just wondering if AA is a big deal.

Yes - especially at lower resolutions.

It's actually the resolution which is causing the majority of the blurryness - if you play at a high resolution (say, 1204 x 1280) you won't notice it too much.

Simply put, AA smoothes out the jagged 'stair step' edges by applying layers of blur.

not "blurry," it smoothes it out. i played with aa set to 4x once, just to see how it looks, now i cant go below 2x.

What resolution do you play at? Also, when I set the AA to 2x or 4x on BF2, it automatically sets it to OFF when I restart BF2. The only way I got it to work was by right clicking the desktop and turning them in manually with nVidia options. Why doesn't it work by changing it in-game?

I play at 1280x1024 and 2x is enough for me

Playing BF2 at high resolutions is fun and it really doesn't take up that much juice from your vid card or your system. I used to have a Radeon x1600 xt and i could run everything on hight at 1280x1024 and it ran very smooth, with AA @ 6x. This was my old sys which i had dual channel kingston ddr 512s, athlon 3700+ @ 2.2ghz with the x1600 xt. That all cost me around 650-700 Canadian dollars. So that's around 100 bucks US. lol. But it is cheap if you find the right deals and the right system config. Don't forget, a computer is an investment, so spend your money wisely and get the right advice from the right people before you make a decision.

I was just playing around with some settings, yet again. As I said, I play with everything at low, I turn off what I can (dynamic shadow & lighting), and I use 800x600 resolution. I kept all the settings the same, and just changed the resolution to 1024x980, or whatever the "medium" one is, I can't really remember . My FPS was 13 - 14 with that res, but with 800x600 it's usually 20 - 25. So, for me, resolution takes up a lot of resources.

I put AA to 8x and there was no ground in-game, and the FPS was 3 - 5. It was like the sky on the ground. I could see right through. I put it to 4x and my FPS was 8. 2x and the FPS was 13. This was all done on 800x600 res.

Guess I gotta stick with everything either off, or low.

Now that I did some testing, I really noticed how much this computer sucks. I can't use the L96A1 sniper on karkand or any map with lots of buildings, because when I look at the building through the scope, my FPS drops big time. It doesn't do this with the M95, though. And whenever I get that "dizzyness" after I've been hit, but not killed, by a grenade, my FPS drops big time.

It makes me so sad, especially when I watch BF2 videos, or look at some high quailty, almost-HD screenshots.

You should play at the resolution that is native to your monitor.

Not even close... 650 Canadian dollas is 622 US dollars.

tom, you really should update your video card. you can get one for around $120 to max out bf2 settings. you should also get a gig of RAM... from my experiences, i think you should use your computer until it dies. then you can get a new computer which seems like a bigger step forward. i went from this pc : 600 mhz, 4.0 mb video card memory, 340 megs of RAM (came with 64), 12 gb hard drive, to whats in my sig.

Yeah, 4x at 1024 x 768 looks blurry, 2x looks just fine .

am i the only person at 6X AA? it looks great, lots of screenshot applause, everything maxed on high with 1680-1050 res, looks quite nice i must say, especially the water and trees.

You should play at the resolution that is native to your monitor.

This is only important if you're using an LCD. LCDs normally look worse at resolutions lower than their maximum (although some people don't notice the difference with the better panels).
