I've only just started commanding myself and the most important thing to do is scan, scan, and scan. Hit the Scan button in the commander screen as often as possible. All enemy unit will appear as glowing red dots for about 25 seconds. Only zooming in will reveal whether it's a tank or a grunt. A fast moving red dot will either be a chopper or jet.

Use the UAV wisely and where it will most benifit your team in a fight. Don't waste it to spot one solitary enemy unit. Be careful how you place it, you want to to use its coverage to maximum effect since it has a limited radius.

Zoom in and use the "Spotted" button (right click on the map and then select from the menu) after a scan for individual trouble spots. It's very handy to your team when spotting enemy troops hiding from their view (especially snipers) or taking back/flanking routes. Also handy during flag caps so no-one can sneak up on your men. Just don't spam it too much as you could end up annoying your team.

^ click on spotted it is there I usally prefer to just drop UAVs and then VOIP the squads if someone is near them I usally dont help out lone wolfs unless their succes at capping a flag would greatly influence the battle

when it says enemy forces it means theres nothing there or what was is dead

if someone is there it'll come up with the appropriate logo and sound

            tank spotted
            infantry
            sniper
            boat
            car etc etc

also the question mark means theres nothing there aswell

There is a excellent Commander FAQ in the Tips Forum and linked below:

You don't need to zoom in to spot. Run the scan, identify where you want to place your UAV based on the location of your forces and those of the enemy and then identify those red dots that will NOT be under your UAV that are of concern to you. Once the red dots from the scan fade away, immediately right click on where the red dots were and select "Spotted" from the drop down menu. This will result in an "Enemy Infantry Spotted", "Enemy Armor Spotted", "Enemy Sniper Spotted", etc.

Easiest way is to SCAN, then right click on red dots and click spotted :)

If you click "Spotted" on the red dots from a Scan it will do absolutely nothing. Your spots will NOT show up on your team's mini-map, so doing this just results in useless spam messages. You must wait until the red dots disappear to spot them.

                    Yes, please follow this.
That's why 90% of messages are spam.

Basically, Scan, UAV at the most appropriate place, order squads, then spot or take care of any drops needed. Repeat.

Wow, learn something new every day. All of my spotting in my limited Commander time has been useless spam. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

The confirmation that you're spot is good will be the appearance of a red, blinking dot (infantry), white dot (enemy commander), sniper icon (sniper) or vehicle icon on your map. This will stay on your screen (and your team's mini-map) for 5-7 seconds.

Is it possible for a blinking red dot spot to appear in the commander's map (zoomed out), but not in my team's mini-map?

please do not right click and press the appropriate thing, jeez all you have to do is right click and hit spotted on an enemy anything and it will be spotted, nothing worse than someone manually spotting a tank so i go for it from minimap and its behind me. this goes for infantry as well. right click left click done. that is all.

No. It'll be on their mini-map provided the spotted enemy is within the range of what your team has up on their mini-map. By the way, that's why the commander should in general only spot enemy that are near their team. If they're not close enough to show up on the mini-map of a team mate, the spot doesn't serve a purpose. Of course, there are exceptions. Enemy sneaking to back flags should be spotted and their numbers and apparent destination should be communicated to Squad leaders via VOIP.
