Vista Ultimate, 2gb ram - Max BF2 settings.

I had 2gb on xp for a long time, and I ran everything maxed out flawlessly. I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate 64 a few days ago and it seems 2gb is not quite enough for max. I still get 80-100 fps, but occasionally it will stutter or lock up for a sec or two.

Currently, Vista is using 757mb of my 2gb with pretty much nothing but my browser open. I don't recall how much memory XP used, but I doubt it was nearly as much.

I have no problem upgrading, I was just wondering if anyone else is having similar results.

It's a bigger, better(imo), newer OS, so of course it will need more memory. Looks like I'll need to grab another gig or two more so both Vista and my games get what they need.

Yeah, I just confirmed it. I added an extra 2 gb that I had in another computer into this one, and all the slowdowns were taken care of. It cut loading times in half as well.

So if anyone else is wondering why bf2/2142 is not performing as well on Vista(with 2gb or less), it's time for a memory upgrade. It looks like 2gb is just not enough these days. Hah, I remember not too long ago people were claiming 2gb was overkill.

Oh well, Im glad I have a reason to upgrade to 4gb...knowing my system will actually put it to use. Especially with games like Crysis coming out soon.

Vista is a memory hogger and it is advised to have atleast 4gb

4gb - 2x2gb $229. I'd say that is pretty damn cheap. Especially considering about 6 months ago I bought a 2gig kit of the same stuff for about that price.

Mmm 6gb total, I think I should be good for a few months.

And you're right about the 64bit, it's the future.

Disable Aero glass, DEP, and the other system resource hogs. Look up a Vista optimization guide. It'll use less and less RAM as you disable more and more useless features.

If you have a spare USB drive lying around, plug that into your computer and use ReadyBoost to get an instant performance boost. Might help your game's stuttering a little.

Re: Vista Ultimate, 2gb ram - Max BF2 settings.

Vista uses ram more efficiently, which is why it needs more. This is a good thing, better to use ram, than wait on a hard-drive. Home Premium is the way to go for games ...Ultimate has all the 'business' stuff which equals an extra expense, but if you need to make BF2 spreadsheets, I guess then you would need it. Vista Basic uses ram the same way as the other versions, so no savings there. If you are going to turn off all the features of Vista, why not just stay with XP? Lastly, 4 gigs isn't that much, and with the next generation of games, it may be minimal. My first computer had 16 megs of ram, and whoa, back then it was fast. For a very long time, there is no way to have too much ram ...when it comes to ram, there is no such thing as over-kill.

Someone else that talks out his *** and doesn't know what he is talking about. Did you miss all the sites that benchmarked with Areo both on and off and found the performance difference to be less than 1%. Here's a before and after (before was when BF2 was running),

Now you tell me how much affect Aero (dwm.exe) using a grand total of 260kb of ram will have. Also the fact that Aero gets turned off when you start the game, and doesn't get turned back on until the game is closed (even stays disabled if you Alt+tab out). And yes I "only" have 2 gb of ram.

Exactly, that and the fact that as soon as you start up a memory hungry app (BF2 for example) vista frees up all that "used" ram.

Im running BF2 with Vista Ultimate on a Dual Core @ 1.86ghz, 2gb Ram and BFG 8800GTS OC. Got it running at full gfx spec and cant say Ive noticed anything different to when I was running on XP.

Also got a 4gb USB Storage Device setup for ReadyBoost on Vista.

It's the Superfetch service doing as it should. You can disable it but it probably has a negative effect on performance (though your precious RAM will be free).

                              Readyboost is useless.
