Alot of people are experiencing problems because they may have bad hardware. Ram, Harddrive, CPU, etc.
Alot of people are unaware that there is a simple (well simple is sort of relative) way to find out if you have a bad piece of hardware.
INTRODUCING: The Ultimate Boot Cd
It is a collection of programs designed to allow the average computer user to be able to test their hardware WITHOUT having to pay tech support.
DOWNLOAD
INSTRUCTIONS: Burning
**Keep in mind that the download is in ISO format so you need an extractor, nero has the capability but you MAY have another program that can handle it.
DO NOT burn the ISO file directly to a CD-R because its not extracted. Either on your burning program, select burn ISO image to disk, or extract it with another program.
In the event that you do NOT have a burning program that can handle ISOs, a free burning program is available at:
HOW TO TEST HD with UBCD
Once you burn the ISO image to a cd, restart your maching, making sure that the BIOS is set to boot from the CD BEFORE the HD, and once it boots select the second option which should be HD Diagnostics. Keep in mind, I havent tried out the new 4.1.1 so it may be different. No one send me hate mail please :)
Anyhow, then you select your HD Brand - Western Digital, Seagate, Fujistu, Hitachi, etc
Now pulls up with a command prompt interface with all this extracting, driver junk flying by. Every once in a while, a window will pop up with a question, JUST KEEP HITTING ENTER until it either brings you to a license agreement or the options for testing.
On the IBM, it will ask you for SCSI and ATA Support or just ATA. If you have a SCSI Drive, which is not that common, just select 'ATA Only' from the list.
If you are unsure, the pictures (which are are the connection types) below will help you:
IDE (ATA)
SATA (ATA)
IF IT AINT THOSE TWO, its SCSI - Congrats
** KEEP IN MIND, there are some IDE Ribbons that are compressed, for style, in gaming machines.
Anyhow the IBM test is kind of generic so it should work with most HDs.
You'd just select quick test, once thats done, start an advanced test.
It will tell you if its bad. Unless it pulls up with a red box, or some type or error message, it should be good. KEEP IN MIND that you may have to select your HD because it may also show your DVD-Rom, Burner, etc in the list.
Usually if you try to test the CDROM/DVD ROM/etc, it will pop up with an error message saying, this drive is not supported in this DFT version or something like that. DONT freak out, you most likely tried to test your CDROM with a HD test.
HOW TO TEST RAM with UBCD
Once you burn the ISO image to a CD, restart your maching, make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD :] and once the CD boots, select the first option, Im not sure what its called in the 4.1.1 Version, and select Memory Tests, then select "Windows Memory Diagnostics" - the test will start.
From there, its a matter of time. It will use a variety of tests and once a full pass has completed, that means that the whole "test" is complete.
SO, once the 'pass' has gone from 1 to 2, your done.
NOW press the 't' key to run the Advanced Test and it will preform more indepth tests on your Ram. Once that 'pass' has gone from 1 to 2...
YOUR FINISHED. If no errors have shown at the bottom of the screen, YOU have good Ram.
Bad Ram happens alot so you never can be too careful.
NOW IF there are errors, unfortunantly, you have (a or multiple) bad sticks of ram. If you have multiple sticks, I suggest testing each stick at a time.
