I can clearly remember an arcade videogame that required the player to clear a building full of terrorists; there were hostages, and you could kill them, but in that case you'd lose a lot of points and so on.
Not too sure about civillians, because HL1 and HL2 are full of them.
    Indeed.

              Er... wha?

              Anyway, moving on.
Redfield, thanks for the the feedback but you need to be careful where you talk of "good guys vs bad guys". There is no such thing.
In the states there is a general train of thought that makes people see "commies" in a bad light automatically, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world shares that opinion, or indeed gives a sh%t.

Look at McClane. He doesn't care for politics and blind patriotism... he just finds himself in situations where there is some seriously screwed up stuff going on and he reacts, for both the most primitive of moral feelings and also personal gain / protection. In these situations we see the good old fashioned dividing line between "k" and "f&cked up" like we saw in WW2.

On the contemporary world stage, however, things are too debatable.

See? Here is you trying to be politically correct, which in turn actually hurts the IMMERSION in your mod. You missed my point by a mile- you need to bring in 2 clear sides you can immerse and identify yourself with. The standard "good" and "bad" sides are the best.

"woohoo! Im an American, killing terrorists!"
"Yeah baby, heres a bad boy with a ton of C4 strapped on my UAZ!"
"Kiss that sickle, you capitalist pig!"

Get it now? Once you identify yourself as a bad/good guy (and you must pick the clear sides, that work no matter what education the person has), its easier to have more fun in the game past pressing the keys.

So throw the political correctness aside, nobody gives a sh!t about 2 factions duking it out over some ricefields in Kambodia. (see what I did here?)

In the states there is a general train of thought that makes people see "commies" in a bad light automatically, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world shares that opinion, or indeed gives a sh%t.
Being politically correct kills the fun and immersion factor. Gaming pshychology 101. :)

Personally, I want to see a game from the bad guy's point of view, for once. All this "defending freedom" bollocks gets tiring...

I want to kill infidels, not defend freedom.

Bingo, me too. I want to play a game where you could pick a side and feel the storyline and immersion for both of the sides.

I think sound plays a huge part in immersion. It feels so much more "real" with 5.1 surround sound (headphones).

The only problem is that by the time you've upped the volume enough for the weapon sounds to vaguely resemble real life, everything else is blowing your ears apart. At a certain point, weapon sounds have this indescribable "zest" that actually makes them sound like real explosions and not bb rounds. Can't beat being able to locate someone without seeing anything either. It's like a wallhack without the see-throughness.

Meh, I guess the whole "good vs bad" thing explains why the most popular shooters involve the USA and some terrorist faction. Maybe our NWO overlords are just desensitizing us through violent video games in order to create a bio-robotic, autonomous army of trained killers to do their bidding, dying at their whim.

                      Time to up my meds.

LOL, thats the thing Camper. Simple and "common sense" (see what I did there?) things work the best.

Also, for weapons sounds- try SWAT4. You can feel the power of the gun. I actually wanted to make a sound comparision of all weapons used in both games about a year ago. Weapon and grenade sounds add sh!tload to the immersion factor. If a nade actually blows into your face with this loud bam, it will make your blood rush.

Chris, although I highly respect your appreciation of McClane, and have this strong feeling we'd get on very well in real life (from the way you come across), I have to stress that I was simply disagreeing with the kind of "Team America" vibe you were giving off.
Anyone who has not been semi-brainwashed by the nature of US media and encroaching "patriotism" knows that the whole "war on terror" and "fighting for freedom" talk is a load of bollocks. First off, the US is not alone in being a free country, and secondly "terrorism", the word, is a political tool.

I truly agree with you when you say it is important to have a sense of meaning and place when you fight in the game (something I knew was missing when I did the write-up but had to let go because the small-scale battles suited the game mechanics). However, I simply do not accept a train of thought that automatically thinks of "good guys" (namely US college drop-outs with guns) and bad-guys (the mystical "terrorists").

I have gone off-topic with this, sure, but I always feel the need to counter-balance irrational views of such important an issue.

Put is this way. Captain-America wannabe, right-wing-humping, Bush-esque freeloaders with US flags in their sigs may think that a gun and expensive kit can make them a tough guy and that US policy is right because the US says so, but that doesn't mean they would get past me with that attitude if we were to cross paths for real.

Chris, you probably don't fit that description but your lack of consideration when mentioning Good vs. Bad really did, and that's what set me off.

Im surprised the votes are so close. I voted for the second one because BF2 is crap right now with all the issues left unresolved, but I don't agree with all the changes you wanted. Bottom line is, everyone will want something different, but something has to change obviously.

Interesting point ShadowMafia. I certainly seems like the main gripe people have with BF2 is it's technical issues and problems with gameplay nuances.

You seem to think of me as one of the brainwashed kids. But its again you who cannot really understand what Im trying to say.

It doesnt matter how politically correct you want to be, you need to pick sides that you automatically think of "good" or "evil". No matter how hard you try, I am willing to bet that a hammer/sickle combo on red background would mean "evil" for you first, at least give a negative first impression.

Thats how you create sides in games. You create sides that you can clearly identify as "Good" or "bad". Screw political correctness, embrace what works in practical life.

Im not ignorant, I know that "commies" arent evil. But a "commie invasion" in a game would instantly sell as a bad guys mission, the simpliest to immerse yourself with.

The next step would be aliens vs humans, and then we have the overused Allies vs Axis theme.

Oh and I love McClane, hes my favourite movie character, on par with Private Hudson.
