Hit detection is worse than you think it is

its not a matter of hitting people sprinting anymore, its common among everyone and everything in battlefield.

    eryxed dont damage tanks.
    missiles go through fav's.

that was the beginning of the end. Then i noticed this:
playing AF, in a littlebird, co-pilot (if u want to call it that) wrenching the crap out of it. Igla smokes us with 2 missiles. No damage. Pilot goes on killing every foot soldier there was in sight.

The line was drawn today. You know how headshots smoke a brighter colour than body shots? well, I was playing sharqi and i happened to pick up a sniper kit (L9). i was on a roof across from construction, my team only had Tv station left. I saw an enemy down below so i took a shot. All i saw was a bright white ball of smoke, and no kill.

Cmon, hit detection is much worse than we all think. Discuss.

Seems fine for me. I'd blame it on your internet connection and distance from the server. On a populated server I usually have to aim slightly ahead of moving targets.

try shooting the little bird with MI-28 canon and see what happens

nothing registers, I had this so many times

^Latency delay perhaps. On your side it may seem as if the target's hit, suggested from explosions or puffs, but server side, you barely missed it.

Hit detection seems exceptional from my experience.

If I wanted to test Battlefield 2's hit detection, I would test it in single-player where my ping/latency would be 0. This would get rid of the "latency factor" that could otherwise fool players to believe they actually hit the target but didn't due to some kind of omnipotent bug.

i know what u mean, after playing singleplayer it seems like the AIs die before u even put 3 bullets in em.
Im by no means a computer/lag/hardware expert, but why does it show signs of damage (smoke, explosions) when u miss? why cant the bullet at least seem like it goes through ur opponent instead of a puff of smoke, which represents a hit. Its just awkward and frustrating.

Re: Hit detection is worse than you think it is

Those signs of damage are simply graphic effects for your enjoyment, determined by your computer, but not a confirmation that you actually hit the target, that would be the "x" on your crosshairs, which is determined by the server.

All multiplayer games have to have a system that somehow takes account of latency delays of each players. For games like Counter-Strike or MOH:AA, it means your responses are delayed, for several games that are in the RTS genre, notably C&C:Generals, EVERYONE suffers to the slowest user so that everyone will be in sync.

For the Battlefield series, even with moderate latency such as 200 or 300, you won't notice any lag compensation just by playing around or looking at things (as in objects won't "skip"), only until you engage your targets. This includes the illusion as if you did hit the target when actually, because of your ping, you missed because you were (latency * .001) seconds late. It's also the reason why there seems to be a short delay between the time you hit a vehicle to the time it actually explodes.

This is from observation only, the technical details is beyond my knowledge. Therefore, what I said could be BS, but reasonable enough for me and thus explains myself well on these "WTF I hit him!" incidents.

              Ping problems?

I went into a low ping server today, average 35ms, and finished the round with 30-6 with a M24.

I never had real problems, sometimes I shoot somebody in the head twice and nothing happens...

Another reason why I think it's ping was when I jumped into a close by server where I had a pings in the 30s. I was flying, duh, and with a few cannon burst the enemy bomber was in fire as it pulled up. Now in my server, where I get a 70-120ms ping, I do the same to the bomber and the only thing that happens is the animation of the bullets hitting.

Dunno about you guys but recently I've been having LOTS of 'omg wtf I shot him in the head 10 times and he's still shooting back' moments, I always play on servers so where my ping is about 30. I guess when soldiers' m16s jammed in vietnam, they didn't say 'OMG LAG my m16 is jammedz', we unfortunately just have to get used to the fact in bf2, sometimes you own on the battlefield but sometimes the game owns you...

It's most noticeable with jet missiles. Create a local Wake server, and go test the F-35. F*cking gold.

i dont think so, ive killed countless people without getting an "x." sometimes i et an x but no kill. Theres always a combination for me of either damaging or not, and seeing an X or not.

It is bad, but think of how many times you would have died had it not been for the hit detection :)

100ping or more i cannot play effectively on the ground, moving to quick it feels like low fps when it is actually slight jitters here and there because of lag, it makes it worse i find if the other guy has a really crappy ping like over 250, than if my ping is under 30 compared to his 250.

Lagshooting my friend, lagshooting. Best way to know where to shoot to hit is to play with your 120 ms ping, let a friend with sub 30 to spectate you and FRAPS your game. Then draw your conclusions.

                              EDIT: Or yeah, BC.
