Random crash to desktop while playing

This really pisses me off. I'm playing the game and just out of the blue i'll get a random CTD. It'll usually happen on spawning or on the trigger of a sound or falling in water or something. I can go a whole game without it happening or it'll happen 20 minutes into playing which makes it really frustrating. My specs are:

    256MB NVIDIA 6600GT
    AMD 2.19 GHZ 3500+
    1GB RAM

It never did this before the 1.4 patch. Can anyone help?

    2 ways to go...

you could turn down most settings, setup your OS to run for performance, and devote as much resources as possible to the game. Like, don't run XFire or TS when playing...stuff like that.

    ..or...

start upgrading, more ram, better video card, depends on your mobo, and what is possible. Seems to me your system is running at or near its limits, and those random crashes are when it reaches it. I wouldn't blame the patch, more likely, just not quite enough resources.

That's where you're wrong. I can run HL2 at 30+ fps with everything maxed on this rig. I've been playing BF2 since 1.0 and have had everything on medium-high, it's only been since the 1.4 patch that i've had these random crashes. There's no error, no message, no nothing, and it'll happen at completely random times. It'll happen when i'm spawning, when i'm putting C4 on a tank, when I bail out of an airplane, etc. I've tried lowering to 800 x 600 and everything medium but I still get these crashes. BF2 is the only game I get any kind of problems on.

System could be overheating. That's caused it to happen to me before.

I use Intel's TAT and when my game quits to desktop I see that my e4300 temps are in high 50s, early 60s. So u r probably right.

Ok, Ok ...it must be the patch then. Everyone with your specs experiences random crashes. It couldn't possibly be something wrong with your system, it has to be the game, and EA sux.

Sorry, but realisticly, if your system has been able to run the game fine in the past, then something has changed since then, and if it were the patch, it wouldnt just be random, it would be fairly regular or even predictable. Looking at your specs, I would say your system is at least 2, more like 3 years old or more. By now, overheating could definitely be the problem. It could be dust, whens the last time you opened it up and blew the dust out of it? Maybe its a fan wearing out, case, cpu, video, power supply ...any of those could start to overheat, and cause a random crash. Check your Bios, make sure there are no voltage issues. There are lots of possibilities, you should go through and eliminate each one. But, there is one thing for sure, ...its not the patch.

..and I'm not wrong about a little upgrading. Another gig of ram would do you great, ..a little boost in other areas wouldn't hurt. Good luck with this problem, I totally get how annoying it would be. :hmm:

That's what I thought too about the overheating. I dusted my rig out last week, there was less freezing but still the same old crash. Nothing has changed since then, and if multiple people with the same specs have the same problem with the same game and the same patch, then i'd blame EA and not our computers.

I've defrangmented, got the program that reads CPU temp and it shows 41C at crash, reinstalled BF2 and went through getting all the patches, deleted some random files off my harddrive, virus scanned with norton, ad-scanned with adaware, and then load up BF2, play for 20 minutes, and crash. Also it's only crashed on Wake Island, I tried the city maps with no crash so it's either something to do with big view distances and water or I just got lucky.

If I was able to run the game perfectly fine for 1.5 years using the previous patches and all of a sudden when I upgrade to 1.4 I have random crashes, what would be to blame?

I'm having similar problems, and suspect my problem is Graphics Processor is overheating not my CPU. Idles at about 51c but graphics start going south, then crash to desktop at about 71c and up. For me also I've been stable as a rock until 1.4. The 1.4.1 patch appeared intended to address this but didn't seem to help. Running P4 XE, 3.46 Ghz, 2g DDR2, 1066 FSB, RAID 0, ATI x850xt pe, 32" 1080p 60hz display :) Did almost every perf tweak I could find (BF2, XP, etc). PC runs great, but BF2 still crashes. Just turned off DEP for BF2 last night, and seems to be helping.

Re: Random crash to desktop while playing

                    Device Drivers....Device Drivers.....Device Drivers

Do I need to say it again?? It has nothing to do with you system components, or general overheating!!!! (graphics card overheating maybe)

It is an nVidia driver in most cases that has been causing the majority of gamers random CTDs. I have tried just about everything, and I still will crash every now and then! I was up to a crash every 5 min, so I did everything possible. (Fresh bf2 install, Defrag, Virus scan, Spyware Scan, Registry Clean, {dump all temp files, cookies, internet caches}, turned on error reporting, updated bios, updated ALL drivers...etc)

Finally got my system to give me an error report and it was the nv4.dll and the nv4_disp, which are causing my problems. I don't know how to directly fix them but they are the buggers causing my CTDs and could be your nightmare too, since you have a 6600 graphics card. ( I am using a 6800)

IF anyone one knows a true solution to fix the nv4.dll or nv4_disp crashes please post it!!!

(Oh I put DEP on alwaysoff - Data Execution Prevention) this seemed to help cut down the CTDs and BSODs) If you clean out your system, and do a fresh install, full patch 1.41 update, and update all your drivers, you will be in better shape!!!

                    Good Luck

Happens to me, but not often, maybe once a week tops, it completely disappears, no error messages, no punkbuster has kicked you, no overheating errors, Just POOF, as if you hit the quit button yourself.
i cant remember if it happened before the 1.41patch but i dont think it did.
