No, not those well dressed people form the 1960s, but map/sever mods.

I've seen plenty mentioned about them in posts here, and genuine gamers rate them over ranked servers. I know diddly.

Now I've plateaued on points....

Please advise!

Project reality for a REALLY realistic Battlefield game, and POE2 for a total conversion of Battlefield 2.

Depends on what you want.

If you think BF2 is too arcade, and want slower, more realistic gameplay, try Project Reality - http://www.realitymod.com/

If you think vanilla is sort of fun, but they nerfed moving and guns too much, and air is too dominant, try Desert Conflict - http://www.desert-conflict.org/

I'd also recommend Project Reality.
Since you are looking for mods, might I advise you to use a Sir. creation called modjive. Every time I DL something from it I get about 850 kb/s, almost a mb per second. And it installs the game files for you, no extracting involved in your part, although its not that hard it makes it easier.

Also try sandbox for a different flavor and esp. if you like building things/messing around, with modded vehicles on some servers.
