    Attack Heli ?

I've been going into empty sesrvers trying to learn how to fly a attack heli. Its alot easier than flying a jet. My one question is i see some heli pilots sit there an keep circling a flag over and over and for the life of me i cant figure out how to do this yet. I know it might seem like a dumb question to some but as a beginner heli pilot i think the question has merit.

    First off, everyones gonna' ask...

    Mouse or joystick?

So let's get that out of the way first.

      • Throttle up
      • Tilt in the direction you want the chopper to go. (As if your doing a barrel roll)
      • Tilt the nose down slighty
      • Use A & D (or your equivalent keys) to control the circle.

I think that's right, even though it's second nature to me now, I can't easily recall the keys I press.

It's very effective on maps like Wake when China have only one flag left, excluding Airfield.

Ok, but I don't use a mouse, just all keyboard. The manuver is like a flat turn, but with the nose down. Turn the helo on its side, like a slide, then aim the nose down. Learn it in either direction. The steeper the nose, the tighter the turn. It takes a little practice, but learnable quick. I have seen way better explainations on the this forums ...may want to do a search. Practice ...and practice

            Re: Attack Heli ?

Get a gunner and hover by the flag instead of circling. Good way to rack up some kill assists and keep the enemy pinned down.

Watch out for AT missles though...

It's a lot easier to do maneuvers like that with a joystick. I can't really explain it, as someone stated it's like 2nd nature to them. I feel the same way. If you're on a stick, just move the cyclic in the desired direction of the bank while applying some aft pressure as to not nose dive into the ground. When you get real good, try them in rearward flight. It's more fun. :)
Also, you might need a little pedal to maintain heading. You'll notice when you're out of trim when the chopper starts to slip or skid out of the turn. If only there were trim strings on the choppers!!!

Maybe you should find a pilot from the TBF2 forums to go fly around...
Im sure there would be many willing players on here.

Theres a chopper training video around here somewhere. Maybe you or someone can find it. Its on youtube somewhere I am sure. The guy shows you some basics and how to "maintain a diameter" or circle a flag.

Heres part of what I posted on my clans forum . . .

How to circle while strafing. This one takes practice. But once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. First, point your nose toward the target you wish to circle (usually an enemy flag or spawn location). Then apply roll in the direction you wish to move your aircraft in a circle. Then apply opposite rudder. If you want to go counter clockwise. Then apply left rudder and "right" roll. Pitch the nose of your aircraft up if you want to increase the radius of your circle. Pitch the nose of your aircraft down if you want to decrease the radius of your circle. Use throttle to control your altitude. If you want to go through the circle faster then inicrease your roll, but also increase your throttle so you maintain altitude. The opposite for slowing the circle. When applying the rudder, tap it. Do not hold it down. You can also use the rudder to adjust the circle radius.

              In short . . .
              Throttle = altitude, strafe speed
Roll = strafe speed, circle direction
Rudder = keep "nose" on target, adjust circle radius
Pitch = adjust circle radius, helps with altitude adjustment

Does that sound about right AncientSerpent3?

What Daestavi said. I suggest practicing with the Mi-28. It's the easiest one to do this with, and once you get a feel for that, the other choppers will come as second-nature.

There's no rudder on most helicopters.

                      Anti-torque systems for yaw control.

Although, there are some dual rotored choppers which their vertical axis' is controlled by rudder. Such as the KA-50/52, KA 25 Hormone.

If anyone has seen a dual rotored machine up close, or even high definition pictures, you'll see that looks like there's a lot that could go wrong. Too fancy for my liking. :hmm:

Doesn't matter how it sounds, as long as it works for you Daestavi. That's all that counts.

I think Army-Dr-'s videos cover circle-strafing: check the tips and suggestions section.

                          Re: Attack Heli ?

No crap there isn’t a rudder. Explain that to the non-flyers, especially those non-flyers who only have flight knowledge of fixed-wing aircraft. I do appreciate your level of intelligence and experience though.

So, for those who are used to flying rotary-wing aircraft in the RL . . .

Replace the following in the above posts . . .
                          Rudder = Anti-torque control
Throttle = Collective / Cyclic control (I believe both of those can alter airspeed, variance depending on if EA/DICE programmed the system as coupled or uncoupled.)
Roll / Pitch = Cyclic control in the F/B or L/R direction

                          Anything I missed?

I apologize for my complete ignorance in recognizing there was another experienced pilot on these forums. I was just trying to help non-flyers understand a few concepts. Like I mentioned earlier, most folks understand what a rudder is, how it works and its function in flight. Not many understand WTF an anti-torque control is, unless of course you were forced to learn it as an overview in IFT or UPT. I’m used to flying fixed-wing aircraft, so I admit my knowledge of rotary aircraft isn’t quite up to par with yours . . . not by a long shot.

I guess I also owe an apology to the folks who I misled by not describing the flight control systems properly. My intent was not to mislead you, but to inform in a simplified context.

AncientSerpent3, I hope your post was truly meant to help inform the uninformed and not to glorify your own intelligence or experience.

                            The KA-50 is sexy.

I think you took that all wrong. You asked me if that sounded right...

Considering the choppers in BF2 all use anti-torque systems, the term rudder should not be used. You asked for my opinion man.

                              Chill. Out.
