Whenever i try to join a server, it lands back on the desktop - i've tried restarting, what could be wrong?

try renaming your Video.con file.
Its in the Battlefield 2 folder in your My Documents directory. Look under profiles, and then 001 or whatever.

There is a bug that make the game quit the desktop if the refresh rate gets changed.
